The one where Claire learns the meaning of "Progressive"
chix in choppers tell us what’s Right
I’ve been wondering for years what, exactly, the ‘progressives’ want us all - well, us - to make progress toward. Remember “Progress is Our Most Important Product”? That was clear: progress was toward making life less bone-crushingly, soul-killingly difficult and wearisome, progress toward keeping the wolf from the door—literally and metaphorically—progress toward making people healthier, better fed, better housed, better educated, progress toward making the world a better, safer, cleaner place. A suitable word for a worthy undertaking. But, somehow, unfitting for the agenda of those who call themselves political ‘Progressives.’
Well thank heavens! Rand Simberg has led me to the answer to my question.
Drew Barrymore… told MTV viewers in one episode that after spending time in a primitive, electricity-free Chilean village, “I aspire to be like them more.” ...
The 32-year-old [Cameron] Diaz… boasted that the cow-dung slathered walls of a Nepalese village hut were “beautiful” and “inspiring,” and she called the primitive practice of “pounding mud” with sticks to construct a building foundation “the coolest thing."
Just let that sink in for a minute....
Pounding mud... “the coolest thing”.....
Barrymore… gleefully bragged, “I took a poo in the woods hunched over like an animal. It was awesome.”
..."I am so jealous right now, I am going—I am going to the woods tomorrow,” Diaz said. A clearly satisfied Barrymore laughed, repeating, “It was awesome."
In areas with no medicine, horrifying infant, child and adult mortality rates, poor nutrition and no electricity, sanitation, or plumbing, where people work dawn to dusk just to feed themselves; in places where no one can read their own language much less 3 or 4 others, where hardly anyone knows the basics of science or even that the world is not flat; in these places, the Bimbo Brigade choppers in, hangs out for a coupla days and pronounces them “cool.” How grateful they must be…
Wait—since there is no electricity, no TV, no phones, no radio, no Lovely Interweb; they have no freakin’ idea who Barrymore and Diaz are.
...[they] also took time out from sight-seeing to express concern about [criticize] proposed development projects in the countries they were visiting...because of their perceived negative environmental and societal impact.
...Barrymore praised the Chileans living in a remote, electricity-free village as “people who are walking the walk and doing it [environmentalism]; they teach me so much."
Just like the life they recommend we all live, Diaz and friends turn out to be nasty, brutish and short.
[and, as we all know: “short people got no reason to liiiive...."]
So now, the mystery clears. I know what the ‘Progressives” want us to make progress toward:
Same dealio with the “subtle and open” Misssy Gyllenhaal [who??]
