Here's a meme . . .
. . . that I want to keep an eye on. Michele thinks that 2004 will be the year of the face-off between the Right and the Left. Today she cites Ted [ptui] Rall's scrawls as support for her point. Maybe I'm just out of the loop here in The Country™, but I don't see that many head-bashing mouth-foaming anti-war "activists" out and about of late. Even inEveryone from radical anarchists to moderate environmentalists expects the NYC/GOP ideological collision to spark the biggest American protest march since the end of the Vietnam War. ...a well-connected progressive leader predicts, ..."Things are gonna burn, people are gonna die."
Whoa fella. What kind of "progress" is this "well connected progressive" talking about? "Back to the caves in droves?!?" And why call it a "protest march" when what is being described is a riot? What could be the possible motivation for all that? Kill all evil humans? [uh oh. that's it, huh?]
It calls to [paranoid] mind a kind of Apocalyptic scenario with the dark forces of evil and entropy lining up for attack on the forces of Light and Life. The Islamofacists teaming up with the Socialists and a few left-over CommiePinkoBastards to square off against the Coalition for Civilization and Rational Thought?!???!!!?
If that is truly in the wind, I think it is high time to change the direction of the dam wind. Let's use some of those civilized thinking skills to reason our way clear of that kind o' wasteful, pointless mess. It reeks of the temptation to join the irrationalist illiterati in that childish, black and white, emotion-tinted thinking perceiving of the most primitive sort.
Just today I read where Deanis feeling discouraged by the disgust he feels at seeing so many who are actually willing to turn to physical threats over a disagreement on a blog. I feel for his dispiritedness -- and I heartily agree with his commenters that to give in and give up is to aid the forces of darkness.
So while all about us are losing their heads, let us keep ours, make reasonable preparations, and pull together to figure out what we can do to avoid wasting time, energy, and civilization on squabbling with asshats.
