The price of obesity? It’s not just a health risk, but a strain on the wallet. The annual cost for being obese for a woman is $4,879 and $2,646 for a man... being overweight will set you back just $524 if you’re a woman and $432 if you’re a guy.

rly?

not just medical bills, but other extras like sick days,

Calling in fat?

extra gasoline

Whaaa??? $.40/decade?

lost productivity

Can’t get to the copier in less than 10 minutes?

["the study"] was financed by a maker of gastric banding, a type of weight-loss surgery

oh.

"We’re paying a very high price as a society for obesity, and why don’t we think about it as a problem of enormous magnitude to our economy?” [Dr. Kevin Schulman, a Duke University professor of medicine who was not involved with the GW research] commented to The Associated Press. “We’re creating obesity and we need to do a man-on-the-moon effort to solve this before those poor kids in elementary school become diabetic, middle-aged people."

And another nudge* piece of the argument to “reshape our environments” to “encouuuurage physical activity” and “promote heaaaalth.” To “make your lives beeeeter.” IOW, to reduce our mobility, decrease our options, be more governed.

yeah - Nudge

  1. “... before those poor kids in elementary school become diabetic, middle-aged people.”

Well, perhaps a start would be to cure the common cold -

-- MONDAY, Sept. 20 (HealthDay News)—At least part of the blame for childhood obesity might be traced to a unexpected cause—a certain strain of the virus that causes the common cold.

New research shows that youngsters who were infected by adenovirus 36, which causes the common cold and slight gastrointestinal upset, were an average of 50 pounds heavier than children who hadn’t been infected by this particular strain.--

No, it is not a one-to-one correspondence, not all obesity is caused or even “linked to” this virus - or other viruses which have been implicated in the past few years. Or the increased consumption of yogurt. Or the change from one type of red food coloring to a different one - yes, food coloring has also been “associated with” the increase in the percentage increase of obesity in the last four or five decades…

  2. Looks like obesity can be traced to just about everything - except perhaps lack of exercise.

Many schools have banned contact sports like tag, soccer, football, because “someone might get hurt” or “someone might get their feelings hurt” (if they lose).

I see a lot of kids walking aimlessly around, thumbing irrelevant messages to other kids who probably don’t care that “now im in the grocery store”...., or midlessly thumbing little icons around a game screen.

It’s not all bad, though.  Near us is a “Fundamental School” right next to a public park.  Most school days I see at least half the whole school running around the park.  They probably do at least 1/4 mile.
