Narrative:
Active and engaged citizens must understand themselves before they can understand, communicate and relate to others. We believe that this is a process that requires increasingly more complex levels of awareness and understanding. In order to fully attain this competency an individual must first explore their own social identities. They must be able to identify the perceptions that the broader society may hold about their social identities. Our goal is to help students begin the process of making meaning and deciding on the role of their social identities as they relate to their personal context. Concurrently, the student must explore the perceptions/biases/ stereotypes that they hold about social identities to which they belong and also about those to which they do not claim membership. It is essential that they trace the source of these perceptions/biases/ stereotypes.
from U of Delaware - home of world famous Gore Hall *cough*
I saw that one, too. Looks like the lady behind it is one Dr Shakti Butler. Her teaching document at U Delaware contains this gem, too:
“... George Washington, famous Indian fighter, large landholder and slave owner, ...”
Her view can be summed up in one formula: “white = evil”.
About that “Dr”:
“Dr. Butler received her doctorate in Integral Studies from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA. Her field of expertise is Transformative Learning and Change.”.
