SAN DIEGO, Calif. The U.S. government is putting the brakes on bicyclists at the world’s busiest border crossing.

Border authorities have eliminated an informal bike lane at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, which links San Diego and Mexico. They say impatient travelers abused a policy giving cyclists express privileges at the border and began enforcing the new rule Sunday.

The bike policy was introduced months after the 9/11 attacks, when increased security created long waits at the border. Some 50,000 cars, and 25,000 pedestrians pass through the port daily.

Mexican vendors soon began renting bikes to travelers waiting in lines that could stretch up to a quarter-mile. For only a few bucks, pedestrians instantly qualified as cyclists, pushing bikes to the front of the line.

Once on American turf, they returned the bikes to men who pack them into vans or trucks and drive them back into Mexico.

...

“So what were you smuggling?”

“Bikes.”
