Interesting bits I have found: Hoder asks for, and receives, lists of five things that "you think would be useful for [a non-Iranian person] in order to find helpful information about Iranian culture, people, society etc. " Cyrus J. Faviar, who has a good blog, btw, gives us a list of Books by Iranian ex-pats for our further edification. The Iranians by Sandra Mackey *Persian Mirrors by Elaine Scioliano The House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III Searching for Hassan by Terrance Ward Funny in Farsi Firoozeh Dumas Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azaar Nafisi Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi In the Walled Gardens: A Novel by Anahita Firouz Foreigner by Nahid Rachlin and films as well: The White Balloon A Time for Drunken Horses The Circle Baran Children of Heaven Whoman recommends Neither East nor West by Christine Bird. Kombiz of Facts on the Ground adds to the list the all-important subject of food as conduit between cultures. He has also given me an addition to my list of fascinating places: Hotel Ramsar Payvand news, sports, books and music, and internet resources. Live blogging from Tehran at Tehran Online. Impressions and thoughts from Kaveh, where's MY elephant? Winds of Change is holding the July 9 Carnival of the Liberties in support of Iranian Democracy. Excellent.

But what struck me most is the Open Letter to Our American "Supporters" by Alireza Doostdar. I recommend it to jump-start the ol' American brain.

  1. Claire,

A very nice roundup of the posts in the blogsphere on Iran. You will love Hotel Ramsar, the size of the place is phenomenal, at least from my childhood memories. I always thought it was the Shah’s former castle. I don’t believe I ever ventured in but I remember a rumor that there were tall boxes and television screens and controllers to interact with inside. I learned years later just how exciting an arcade can be.

  2. Slight correction in my name—sorry for being so late.

Have you read any of those books?

  3. So far, I am working thru *Persian Mirrors by Elaine Scioliano.  Good stuff.  I like the historic context she gives but it doesn’t go back so far.  There is so *much* history to Iran and Persia that comes to bear on even the littlest factor.  Context—rich and dripping . . .

I heard Firoozeh Dumas on the radio and her book sounds good, too.

Have you a recommendation which I should read next?
