Thoughts on Disaster
this one and the ones to come
It strikes me while watching the Death and Disaster Network [CNN] that many Americans have a certain set of expectations about the world. Those may have to change.
Listening to the various reporters and reports, I hear such uncomprehending amazement that things would deteriorate so rapidly—or at all— into Third World conditions “here in America” “in the America *I* grew up in.” Mebbe I’m just old and jaded, but when I learned the levee broke, I could see this coming. Most of these reporters are 20-something, so I guess they still have a lot to learn about the Human Condition, but I still find it ...disconcerting that so many of them—some of whom have been to Iraq—are so naive. Maybe they thought Iraq is one thing, being ‘over there,’ and America is another, being US and all.
Sure, if some big disaster struck around here, I would expect my neighbors to behave in a rational, decent way. And I’m dam sure that there are a few who would revert to primitive behavior; based on their innately primitive view of the world. Some of those people will be the infantalized underclass or the criminal class, and some will be the brittle, bitter Moonbats who believe that government is really the Perfect Parent. [the “Good Mother"][which is the expectation makes them so very very angry at Daddy Chimpy—but that’s another rant...]
Those who are so shocked will not anticipate primitive behavior and then will become prey. Thereby making conditions more difficult for the rest.
Maybe it’s time for me to knock off watching this TV crappola. I got the general idea already.
UPDATE: As CNN [baldly standing there with its face hanging out] tries to blame this disaster on Bush and Iraq, the lone voice of one ACE engineer is heard, calling in the wilderness, that that program would have made not a lick of difference as “this was about a levee break.”
