I had a lovely experience tonight.  At the membership meeting for our little growing ‘fight the regulatory “takings” in the County General Plan’ group I met 40 more really nice, genuine concerned Americans who are ready to stand up and fight.

It turns out our speaker was originally from Cuba and she spoke so clearly and evocatively about why she devotes so much of her time to fighting the enviro-stalinists in her own county.  “Make no mistake—this is War.  They will take a little freedom from you here and another there and pretty soon, you will be in the place of my grandparents—fleeing with only the clothes on their backs.  But there will be no America to flee to.  We must make our stand.”

It was exactly what my friend N. said on the day I first met her.  She made the simplest and most moving statement to the Planning Commission and the hall of 600 people about why she fled from Argentina and how it feels to her to see here the same take-over by the ever-growing number of petty bureaucrats.

And this room of people understood and responded.

I feel ever so much more hopeful.  I think we are gonna have to do some work to rid ourselves of what Colonel Jerry calls the “fleas in our campsite.” Fascism is on the march again, as though it were just another force of Nature that, like cold and hunger, must be battled on a daily basis.  We gotta step up and each do our little bit and we can keep the dream of a Land of the Free alive and well.  It’s a debt we owe to those who came before us.

  1. Claire,

Funny you should mention Cubans. A coworker escaped Cuba legally (i.e. didn’t come on a leaky boat) and gets more and more depressed about the state of the US every time we talk about it. He has a lot of trouble, after experiencing communism first hand, understanding why our elected officials etc seem determined to implement it here (of course they don’t say that). He understands enough though to see the parallels between us and the Roman empire.
