The Spook Lid
because that hat story really sends up the red flags Principle #1: What people tell you illustrates their world view. [...ie "sez more about them than it does about you..."] Principle #2: What people choose to tell you when they are intentionally working to shape your opinion or impression illustrates how they see you. And the story goes: Dropped Hint. Black Attaché Carried Everywhere. Secret Compartment. Intrepid Reporter Digs. Reluctant Revelation. The Lucky Hat.Lileks' impression: But there’s nowt as queer as folk. But. But. How did this work, exactly? Did the CIA agent take off his hat as he was hopping off the boat to wade into the jungle? Here, take this, think of me. Or here you go, pal, you lost your hat back there, take mine, I have another. Square this with the narrative: Kerry was bitter as he bobbed in Cambodia, shot at from all sides – so he takes this hat, this extra hat, this spook lid back to barracks, and now it replaces his own hat as the object that spells luck. That sums up his experience. That brings it all back. Not the hat he wore on the boat in combat, but the hat he got from a spook on an illegal mission – that’s the good luck object, that’s the prized possession. Work for you?
un huh. It sheds a sad, self-aggrandizing light on the candidate that comes off as pathetic. To me. Is it intentional? Do they not notice? Or not see it? Or not care? [....have they already given up? ... or is it Hillary-prep time? *yeesh*] Or is that how they see us -- or rather how they see the "swing voters?" Easily impressed? Hell, Scott Peterson had more credible pick-up lines. Or is it bait for the conspiracy theorists who really, really want to believe in his veracity? "oh, sure -- I geddit now. The gubbmint [NixonBush] will of course deny that Kerry was in Cambodia -- it was all CIA lies!!!" The DhimmoCraps: "A chicken in every pot and a facile conspiracy under every bed." Kerry: "I wish they had a delete button on LexisNexis." [I just betcha do] . ThanQ! and I recommend you to read: Tim at 4RRW , PowerLine [post perfectly titled "A Persistent Oddness" ], Captain's Quarters, Hewett interview with Steve Gardner who was serving on Kerry's boat for "two months and two weeks of Kerry's four month, 12 day tour" -- including Xmas '68.
