The more ya look, the more ya see...

In reading about the Nixon I ran across a throw-away line about Robert Redford being high on the Nixon enemy list. I wondered why and wandered off. Then I ran across the reminder that Redford played bob Woodward in "All the President's Men." Wonder if there any dots to be connected there... At any rate... during that era Spiro Agnew characterized the press as "a tiny, enclosed fraternity of privileged men."

within 24 hours of the [Duelfer Report] damning report's issuance, Judith Miller and her colleagues had the names of the U.S. companies involved - Chevron, Mobil, Texaco, Bay Oil and one Oscar Wyatt Jr. of Houston, who may have profited by $23 million

Now all this would seem very damning to the Bush administration, particularly if ya read the NYT... but the "it's all about the Oiiiiillll" contingent notwithstanding; if BushCo were in league with these folks, why would Bush have invaded Iraq and busted up their little party? hmmm? Oh, and who else's name keeps popping up? "Marc Rich, the American billionaire who was for many years a fugitive, until blessed with one of Bill Clinton's midnight pardons." There's a thread just begging to be tugged.

  1. I think you need to read more…

  2. If you’ve got something to recommend, please do.  Otherwise, whatcher point?  [Mr O’Reilly?]

  3. Umm, Claire, not “Darfur” (that area of the Sudan), but “Dueffer” Report.

What Miller, et al. don’t say (surprise) is that certain oil transactions were completely legitimate (that’s why it was called “Oil for Food"). Without separating the authorized from the non-authorized, the NYT just muddies the issue.

  4. Sorry… that should have been “Duelfer”

  5. Thanks, John—got the Duelfer fixed.

    Hmmm—NYT, muddying an issue?  Who’da thunk it…

  6. I’ve actually worked with Miller, some years back. She wasn’t a bad reporter at the time, but had a bad reputation for sleeping with the subject to get a tough interview. Great fun when drunk, though… really good stories.

  7. aah… professionalism and journalistic integrity.  and personal integrity… No wonder we ll have such high regard for MSM.

Do ya think Koppel slept with the VC for that footage the other nightline?
