Suicide Attack Kills
Izzedine Salim, the leader of the Iraqi Governing Council, was killed this morning in a car bombing in Baghdad, which killed at least five other Iraqis. Six Iraqis were wounded in the blast, U.S. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt said by telephone from Baghdad. Kimmitt said two American soldiers may also have been injured in the explosion, which occurred at about 9:30 a.m. ...The killing of Salim, the holder of the council's rotating presidency, comes as the United Nations today begins debating a resolution to endorse the planned June 30 handover of power to an interim Iraqi government. Salim will be replaced as council leader by Ghazi Ajil Alyawar, Zebari said at a World Economic Forum meeting at a Dead Sea resort in Jordan. ``This terrorist attack has shown that the members of the governing council are prime targets for the enemies of Iraq,'' Zebari said. The political process ``will continue. It will not undermine us. It will strengthen our resolve.''
