During the Apollo Program, there was a study that demonstrated that for every $1 of taxes spent by the Space Program, $14 was returned to the economy.  Find another investment that does half that well on returns and I’ll plunk down all my money…

  1. Taxes are not investment, however.

  2. Hey Stoo,
If you figure the return as a style of living, protection (the military, fire and police), services (Medicare, Medicaid, public healthcare), etc. taxes ARE an investment. Those that go to the space program seem to have paid much better dividends than any other area. (Except defense, without which we would all be speaking German. And even there much is wasted as it is in most bureaucracies.)

    Good post Claire. Very informative.

  3. Joated,

Other than Defense, nothing you listed is the federal governments business—just social engineering.

Police and fire are best maintained and funded at the local level.

And I heard Clinton make your same argument, when he was in office, and it was as invalid then as it is today.  When an investment is made, the investor voluntarily funds a project or entity, given a level of confidence that there will be a return on that investment.

Taxes are compelled, and the only reasonable expectation for those tax dollars taken is mismanagement.
