Sit'n'Whine vs Go Do Useful Stuff
it's net even a blue/red thing -- necessarilyAccording to Michael Totten, Juan Cole is conspiracy theorizing about the brothers who run Iraq the Model. Apparently, they don't blog about hating the US or freedom enough so they must be part of the VRWC and underwritten by a neocon thinktank. I mean, their ISP is in *gasp* Abilene TX -- enough to hang 'em right there. *eye roll*
Cole claims to know that Iraq the Model is "far out of the mainstream of Iraqi opinion," though declines to indicate his sources for that conviction. Hokay--fiiiine. Yet another case of "our little brown Arabic brothers cannot possibly comprehend or desire freedom or democracy..." Identified and noted, Cole. We hear you "have [your] suspicions about one or two sites out there already " the rest of us, too. We "well funded neoconservatives" who are "attempting to spread disinformation" [like bringing elections to those 'impossible to free' Afghanis] will watch our step, m'kay?
OTOH, Jim Hake of Spirit of America emailed this report:
On Thursday, Omar and Mohammed from Iraq the Model and Friends of Democracy, Kerry Dupont from SoA and I met with President Bush in the Oval Office. It was a half-hour meeting with the President. Paul Wolfowitz was also there. I'll be posting more information in the next two days but here are two items.
About half way into the meeting the President said to Omar and Mohammed, "I want you two to know that we are going to stay until the job is done. It doesn't matter what the rest of the world says. It doesn't matter what the UN says. We are going to stay until the job is done. It's important that your country knows that." It was a powerful and moving moment.
After talking about Spirit of America, Pres. Bush turned to Omar and Mohammed and said, " You see gentlemen, that is the beauty of America. I never met this man before but he's out there helping to win this war on terror just as much as Wolfie here. That's what I believe in." He went on to talk about the importance of private-sector, grass roots initiatives like SoA.
Hmmm... whining vs accomplishing

Patterico has an interesting story about meeting the Iraq the Model bloggers.
Omar and Mohammed, with the help of Spirit of America, are working on bringing the power of blogs to Iraq on a larger scale.
They are using an Arabic language tool to empower Iraqis to set up their own blogs, and will be giving free blogs to Iraqis.
I can't tell you how important I think this is.
I agree with Patterico -- free and unrestrained information is the backbone of democracy.
