Public Aid, Private Matter?

stupid should hurt

Our safety net has become a drag net, catching up the stupid along with the deserving.

Half of American kids will live in households receiving food stamps before age 20 ... one in five children rely on food stamps for years.

Only about 67% of people who are eligible for food stamps actually receive them ...

Here’s a question for those collecting food stamps:  Do you have a cell fone / gym membership / cable/satellite TV / Sirius radio in your new Escalade / drink more than 1 Starbux a day?

[Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation] “There’s no evidence that even consistent poverty in the U.S. produces a nutritional risk,” he says, noting that rich and poor children tend to have about the same intake of protein, vitamins and minerals.
Food stamp eligibility for a family of four:
-- Monthly gross income: $2,389 or less
--Cash resources, such as a bank account: $2,000

Just for the record; I believe it’s a Good Thing to help folks out if some horrific, sudden thing befalls them.  Churches and various non-profits do a grand job of it; but they often have requirements, like budgeting, job searching and generally not making stupid choices.  They do that out of respect for those who gave them the money to help others.  The gubbmint has no such respect for those “giving” the money because it was not given.  It was taken.

  1. This is from the latest press release from our governor:

“The discussion is part of this year’s Harvest Week and comes as Congress prepares to reauthorize federal child nutrition programs administered by the state. For the past three years, the state of Oregon has received bonus dollars from the Federal government for its exceptional administration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly the food stamp program. Oregon is noted as one of the top states in ensuring that those eligible access these benefits.”

Guess it’s easier than making the state attractive for private investment.

  2. “Oregon is noted as one of the top states in ensuring that those eligible access these benefits.”

    Is he complaining or bragging?

“Half of American kids will live in households receiving food stamps before age 20...”

    From the USA Today article:

“...noting that rich and poor children tend to have about the same intake of protein, vitamins and minerals.”
    ...
“Percentage of children who use food stamps by age 20: 90%”

There’s a link to a news story about Costo accepting food stamps:

    Costco/food stamps

“Most users no longer receive stamps, but instead carry the value on a card that can be swiped at checkout much like a bank debit card.

That makes it easier and more discrete for shoppers and speeds the checkout and reimbursement processes for retailers.”

[I can’t believe that newswriters still don’t know the difference between “discreet” and “discrete”.  Well, it’s attributed to AP, so I’m not surprised.]
