On Another Note . . .
I, along with many who-will-remain-un-named-to-spare-the-guilty, was personally involved in the Initiative process lo these many moons ago. The California Space Initiative intended to get the Governor, or the legislature, I forget,# to write a letter to Congress in an attempt to get 'em off their fat duffs and open their eyes to the immense returns to be gained by continuing the exploration and habitation of places off our planet. Needless to say, none of that happened and we are all the poorer for it. [Spiritually, evolutionarily, emotionally, and particularly monetarily. Rand did a conservative study that indicated a $14 return for every $1 invested in space exploration. And that was just for a part of the Apollo stuff. I'd take that kind of investment any day, eh?!? aaaarrrgh /soapbox.] In fact, if Space Exploration and Development had continued, we wouldn't be having this economic crisis in CA. [And less so in the whole world...] So much of the equipment and data comprehension mechanism would have been built in this state that the dot.com bubble would have looked like chump change in comparison. *sigh* "...but for what might have been..." [ok. /soapbox fer sure this time...] Point of the story? We accomplished what we did utilizing the principles of good old fashioned grassroots politics. It was hard but it wasn't difficult. Parts were even fun. Not the parts involving paella, mind you, but parts, nonetheless. [btw, do ya know how downright weird it is to Google something you lived and come up with *no* results?!? Zip, zero, nada, nadie. Yep, I yahoo-ed and all the others. I think I'll toddle off to get my Early Bird Special, now. Mashed peas and custard, yow. . . . *grits what teeth she has left* oy. ]
