Oh! NOzzzz!!!
coverage watch
I’ve been tuning in the coverage of the massive flooding in the Midwest awaiting the scenes of looting. chopper shootin’ and roof sitting amid giant letters spelling “H L E P”. So far, I’ve been sorely disappointed. All I’m seeing is people fighting Mother Nature bravely—some losing, some winning, all fighting.
But where does the Mississippi River end? Yep. I imagine, if there is any leftover flood water by the time it gets that far, I will be rewarded by massive scenes flooding my TeeVee of wailing, weeping, and breast-feather-tearing… by Geraldo et al.
Anybody says history don’t repeat itssef, just ain’t payin’ no attention:
“ Abstract. The 1993 midwest flood was one of the most significant and damaging natural disasters ever to hit the United States. Damages totaled $15 billion, 50 people died, hundreds of levees failed, and thousands of people were evacuated, some for months.”
But wait! (as the say) There’s more:
Starts with
“1726: Residents of New Orleans, near the mouth of the Mississippi River, build artificial levees ranging in height from 4 to 6 feet to protect their young city from the ravages of floods.”
New Orleans, being at the tributary of this mighty river, this bringer of steamboats and floods, was seen as the obvious place to build a big city. That the land level was below sea level must have been an added attraction.
