Mr Phelps, your tape is on fire
Southern members of the Bear Flag League, an opportunity presents itself:Top Hollywood activists and intellectuals are planning to gather this week in Beverly Hills for an event billed as 'Hate Bush,' the DRUDGE REPORT has learned!
intellectuals ??? Oxymorons 'R' them . . .
"This is the most important meeting you can attend to prevent the advancement of the current extremist right wing agenda. Do not miss this meeting. This will be a high-level briefing to discuss the strategies... to affect what happens next November."
Now's your chance to gather enough comic material for the next few months' writing: dress like a waiter or a *star* [cuz the Left don't believe in terrorists or security] and crash this party! See the article for a list of those involved. This gathering of the "nouveau intelligentsia" is being called "Hate Bush 12/2 - Event." On some college campuses that title would qualify the gathering as a "hate crime." Oxymoronica Abunduncia In a related story, General Clark seems to have lost his mind: [commentary from CK Rairden, Washington Dispatch]
Clark is meeting with such political heavyweights as Madonna and J Lo and having serious policy discussions with the stars. Clark is now after not only the Hollywood left’s cash, but also their endorsement. ...“a 90-minute policy discussion with Madonna in her Los Angeles home recently.” A friend of the star was then “authorized” to disclose, “Madonna was very impressed with Gen Clark's intelligence and his vision for America.” The general and Madonna’s discussion ranged ran the gamut from “Iraq to President Bush's recent tax cuts.”... ...The Hollywood left is now routinely ridiculed when they attempt to elevate their political opinions over any other voices because of their celebrity. And once mocked, the show biz kids play to their left leaning supporters claiming “censorship” in drama queen tones. The Clark campaigns’ celebration of the entertainers “elevated status” over the “average citizen” is not only risky but also ill advised. ...And as an added bonus, the general with the starry eyes gets to stroke his ego and hang out with the Hollywood elites while trying to hang on.
Somethin's gettin stroked, and it ain't brain cells . . . Maybe for an encore he could negotiate a peace treaty with Osama?
There was a newsbite today about the liberal left hate Bush campaign—but all they talked about was the lightweights and nuts like Michael Moore and Al Franken.
Am I missing something? Doesn’t this just trivialize the left?
Posted by on 12/01/03 at 11:40 AMYou know, I have met some of these celebrity types and I bet I know someone who hangs out with them. Maybe we can infiltrate? What would we do?
Posted by Patrick on 12/01/03 at 04:28 PMThe liberal-left hates Bush; The conservative-right hated Clinton.
Some people take Al Franken seriously; Some people take Pat Buchanan seriously.
Meanwhile the “Washington Dispatch” (whatever that is) thinks there is such a thing as a “Hollywood Elite” and that Madonna is a member.
This too, like Gallstones, will pass. In much the same way.

Doesn’t this just trivialize the left? Wouldn’t that be redundant—at least on an intellectual level? Madonna and Brittany as policy wonks… *shudder*Next we’ll have Adam Sandler as ambassador to ...oh, say, the House of Saud, non?
Posted by on 12/02/03 at 03:21 AMPatrick,
That could be fun. Gather your troupe of Merry Pranksters, though you may have to dedicate a coupla days to growing some scaggly I’m-too-cool-to-shave face moss, and a hip baby-bird hair cut. Get some undercover garments at the thrift store—the I’m-so-rich-I-must-look-like-I’m-’domestically challenged’” outfits. Practice some “nouveau intelligentsia” phrases [good subject for a blog contest] and show up, acting like you belong. Remember to slouch.
Make sure you neglect to tip the waiters.

As hard as it is to believe some people do take these clowns as serious “commentators on the human condition.”
Not only that they vote!
Point of Evidence: We have an Attorney General of the U.S. of A. who put a bra on a statue of Justice because bronze boobs makes him sexually excited.
Point of Evidence: A former President who, when detected in perjury, defended his deposition by claiming his testimony depended on “what ‘is’ is.”
Point of Evidence: Supporters of the AG claiming statues of naked people led to the break-up of the American Family.
Point of Evidence: The National Organization of Woemn (which has a founding principle that men should not use positions of power to prey on women) defending the former President (who used his position of power to prey on women.)
As near as I can determine the average American uses his/her brain to keep his/her ears apart and head from imploding. Other than those two functions it’s a rather useless organ that could be eliminated without undue repercussions.

No idea who said this—it sounds like ATinNM. Now, now. There actually is a left with substance—not the people who think it is them, incidentally—but the Hollywood left is regarded as crazy by the rest of the Dems.
Posted by on 12/02/03 at 11:58 AMSorry, BillP, it’s not mine.
For one thing I, like you, think there is a left with substance.
Posted by ATinNm on 12/02/03 at 01:04 PMT’was I—and you can both bite me.
What I was referring to is the Left that shows today—consultations with Hollyweird, presidential candidates utilizing the position to play Dating Game, a major [well, formerly major] US city actually taking a watermelon seriously in a mayoral race—stuff like that there.
What was formerly a respectable term, “liberal,” has been assimilated by socialists, domestic terrorists, and the New Puritans. *ptui* Resistance was futile. . . or nonexistent.
Posted by Claire on 12/03/03 at 07:12 AMsome people would be pleased to be mistaken for ATinNM—though, don’t press me to identify them with specificity.
The thinking left hasn’t disappeared; they’re just buried in exactly the same way that the thinking right has been buried by fundamentalists. Actually, that’s a pretty good analogy. The Hollywood left is to liberalism as the religious right is to classical liberalism.
Posted by on 12/03/03 at 11:31 AMTaking a watermelon as a serious candidate in California shows remarkable perspicacity. It can’t be any _worse_ than the normal California politican and when everything goes rotten the problem is immediately identifiable.
And *ahem* I am the ATinNM from which all other ATinNM are mere reflection. Many aspire but, alas, are but shadows on the wall, reflecting darkly.
One of the more strange things is the way the thinking left and thinking right has been trampled under the way Debate is framed. Normally one has the wild-eyed fanatics of A (Being dipped in boiling oil) OR the shouting devotees of B (Being burned at the stake.)
Chose Thou Wisely.
Posted by ATinNM on 12/03/03 at 02:22 PMHey. As the newest Bear Flag League member, I have two observations:
1) Watermelon is important in this state. At least, produce is important in this state. We are the nation’s salad bowl, and don’t you forget it.
2) Awww, “Hollywood.” Which isn’t even a city, strictly speaking. I’ve been to a handful of these “industry"* events. Most of them, oddly enough, are held in New York. At most of them they hand out red ribbons by the basketful, never explaining what the logical connection is supposed to be between, say, AIDS awareness and the Emmy awards. There’s a distinctly sheep-like aura to the proceedings.
I like what Brad Pitt said: “ when it comes right down to it, I’m a grown man who wears makeup. Why would you want my opinion on politics?”
Why indeed. He’s the smartest of them, in recognizing his own limitations.
* To those in entertainment, “the industry” is their own industry. Just as, to those in porn, “the industry” is adult films. I, me, mine.
Posted by Little Miss Attila on 12/03/03 at 03:02 PMA] I could never aspire to be mistaken for ATinNM, [using phrases like Point of Evidence—wow] and I would shudder to be a mere shadow on the cave wall . . .
2] the way Debate is framed Bingo—agreed. The question creates the answer, and all. Sound bites seem easier to come by in the nether regions of the extremes. Black and white simplistic thinking being a hallmark of extremism… The ability to comprehend shades of grey a sign of maturity…
C] a “watermelon” is much like an “oreo”—only it is Green on the outside and Red on the inside.
D] Exactly, Miss A. Hollywood is not a city but a state of mind. The “In Crowd” is all and to belong one must conform. Makes the thought police look like softies. [I saw a very good portrayal on the ever-so-subtle-and-deep South Park last nite. Coming in half way thru it still took me only 2 seconds to ID the Rob Reiner character. This is must see TV.] It is more about Power and Control than anything else. That’s what “PC” stands for, non?
