More on Blogging
As I study further this *new human activity* of blogging, I am discovering the beginnings of the conversation about the social rules and mores of the sport. As I study further this *new human activity* of blogging, I am discovering the beginnings of the conversation about the social rules and mores of the sport. There are several pieces on individual blogs that state the writer's own purposes and tolerences about writing and responding to readers. Most are pretty dam funny and well written. As a whole, these boil down to, "It's my blog and I call the shots. Play nice and you're invited to join in. Make a mess on the carpet, and you may be disinvited." Admirable sentiments. Exactly the rules I have at my house. "You want to call all the shots, get your own blog/house." (Older teenagers *really* hate that last bit. Which is as it should be...) This piece reminds us that we don't "know everything about a writer simply because you read their weblog on a regular basis. Any judgements [sic] you make will be based on the information they have provided" which, they point out is likely to be incomplete, or complete ...er, fantasy. Sound advice. It's what my grandma and Theodore Sturgeon taught me about meeting new people. It does fail to mention that any judgments are also based solely on the judgers own personal perspective which may or may not correspond with anyone else's. But that, too, is a condition that obtains in, so called, *real life.* Included are admonitions against stealing. Stealing material is obvious, but the clear description of stealing bandwidth by direct linking may be an unknown concept to genuine net newbies. Helpful. And the ever-sensible, "if you are offended by what you see here, look away." Yes, Virginia, the world is filled with nasty things among the nice and, unless someone is getting hurt and you can do something about it, go on about your business of making the world better. Next, however, it takes a more foreboding tone, "Never contact the writer for more details on events or personal information than what they have already provided on the site." (Hm) "If you are meant to know, you will." (?!?) "...you are peering in on their life." (ok, eewww)Sorry, this was the one I meant to comment on (but I did like the other one too).
Time I was in bed and asleep I think…
