Looting the Culture

The veneer of civilization is thin, indeed.  And we Americans, who are so accustomed to the outward trappings of human accomplishment, forget time and again that civilization is not about indoor plumbing, fresh water and instant communications.  It is about decent, principled behavior.  When all hell breaks loose, for some the niceties of self-disciplined social interaction disappear in a wash of mind-numbing fear and desperation.  Others, realize that desperate times call for even more rigorous commitment to the principles of civilized behavior—that set of Values which makes a hellish situation infinitely more manageable.

But we see reminders around us every day of the tenuousness of our commitment to basic principles of civilization.

“I hate Republicans and everything they stand for!”
“...black genocide...,” ... “African Americans built this nation. Descendants of slaves are being allowed to die."
AirAmerikkkaka’s RANDI RHODES:  “This President is never gonna do the right thing. I think somewhere deep down inside him he takes a lot of joy about losing people, if he thinks they vote Democrat or if he thinks they’re poor, or if he thinks they’re in a blue state, whatever his reasons are not to rescue those people who are (planning?) for their safety."

So why was I thinking of starting a movement against giving aid to the stricken areas?

Because these are red states. They voted for Bush. ...A large part of me still believes that many of these W-worshipping numbskulls deserve to suffer and to die. They brought it on themselves. Let them look to Jayzuss for aid: It’s time they stopped leeching off the more productive blue staters.

So, at least, I started to write. But then (to paraphrase the old song) I thought I’d better think it out again.

Many of the victims, the ones who have suffered the most, are poor. The hardest hit were the blue state folk living among the red state maniacs. New Orleans, we should note, went heavily for Kerry.

And that’s why we must help. Although it was very tempting to say otherwise.

“Desperate people do desperate things,” said U.S. Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif.
I slowed down and started to pull over to offer her a ride. At the very last second I noticed a “W” sticker on the back of her vehicle and I sped up and drove off.
“Who are we to say what law and order should be in this unspeakable environment?” Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D) Illinois said.

“Who are we?” We are civilized human beings.  If we do not say what law and order, and decent human behavior “should be” in the most unspeakable of environments we will be the formerly civilized human beings who put an end to ten thousand years of human progress away from the caves and clubs.
