courage of their convictions?

Or just convicted?

Three Americans whose disappearance in Iran ... [are] UC Berkeley graduates whose interest in Middle Eastern culture and human rights led them abroad to study and do freelance journalism ...

Shocked.  Shocked, I tell you.

[Both] are 27 [and] once lived in the same Oakland co-op and taught a student-led class at Berkeley that envisioned a harmonious, postcapitalist society.

With unicorns, I suppose.

[Shane] Bauer [a Minnesota native who is fluent in Arabic] graduated with honors from UC Berkeley in 2007, earning a bachelor’s degree with a major in peace and conflict studies and a minor in Arabic. He went to Sudan’s Darfur region to research a thesis on the crisis there.

[Sarah] Shourd is described by those who know her as passionate about teaching, traveling and politics. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in English in May 2003, she worked as a tutor with Americorps...

...describes herself on one Web site as a lover of “fresh broccoli, Zapatistas [read: "libertarian Marxists"] and anyone who can change her mind."

A feat I suspect couldn’t be accomplished with a Malkin-load of facts and a 100# Cluebat.

[Joshua] Fattal, who earned his bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and policy, is a Pennsylvania native who recently worked and lived at a sustainable living research center in Oregon....

[He] founded a class in spring 2005 called “Liberation and reality: moving toward a collective autonomy” through UC Berkeley’s student-run DeCal program.

I hope they enjoy their stay in the Peeeeoples Iran.

  1. Did an AltaVista search on “sustainable living research center oregon” and found this:

“Another issue to consider in arriving at a genuinely sustainable model of housing is longevity. Even a staunch conservative ought to be able to agree that paying 10% more for materials and 10% more for labor would make sense if the house can be expected to last four times longer. A major factor in creating long lasting houses is beauty. If a house is beautiful, people are going to love it, care for it, maintain it and cause it to last for generations. Every day in the U.S, butt-ugly, 40 year old track houses are dumped into landfills - an unsustainable practice if ever there was one.”

When do we get our Beauty Czar?

  2. “... a harmonious, postcapitalist society.”

My oxymoron-meter is sounding an alarm.

“... a major in peace and conflict studies ...”

That’ll get him interviews all over corporate America.

    “... UC Berkeley’s student-run DeCal program.”

Thanks for bringing that up.  I’ve been trying to remember that one for a long time.  Here are a few of the courses you can get university credit for:

James Bond: Politics, Pop Culture, Hero

The Life and Legacy of Tupac Amaru Shakur

    The Joy of Garbage
“This class sets out to answer many of your questions about garbage.”

Come Out and Play: Designing and Playing Games Outside

OG:  [somebody wrote] “Every day in the U.S, butt-ugly, 40 year old track houses are dumped into landfills...”

That’s tract houses.  I seriously doubt the landfill-dumping.

  3. It’s from the Maitreya Eco Village site:

    http://www.maitreyaecovillage.org/Maitreya Green_Building.htm

Until the Tootsie put this post up, I don’t think I
would have ever taken a look for “sustainable living research center oregon”. Mebbe “stupid hippies”, but how many hits would that get?

  4. OG: from the Maitreyia site:

“They will build houses out of earth, straw and round wood. They will research making their own paint and plasters, etc.

Reminds me of the Yeats poem:

“I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
    And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.”

    Mud huts.

“Maitreya”: “Maitreya is a bodhisattva who in the Buddhist tradition is to appear on Earth, achieve complete enlightenment, and teach the pure dharma.”
