The Justice Department properly [despite that pesky Bill of Rights] withheld the names and other details about hundreds of foreigners detained in the months after the Sept. 11 attacks, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. ...[They] determined that disclosing such information could provide a roadmap [there's that word, again] of the government's Sept. 11 investigation for international terrorists. ...U.S. Circuit Judge David B. Sentelle ...said judges are "in an extremely poor position to second-guess the executive's judgment in this area of national security." [because dog-forbid they should be allowed to know anything] Circuit Judge David S. Tatel accused his colleagues of "uncritical deference to the government's vague, poorly explained arguments for withholding broad categories of information about the detainees." [even $ he'll be detained by week's end]
and on a note closer to home...
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, [t]he chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Tuesday he favors developing new technology to remotely destroy the computers of people who illegally download music from the Internet. [if they know I'm downloading music, do they know that I (blush) still read .......] ...Legal experts have said any such attack would violate federal anti-hacking laws. ...[Hatch interrupted to say] "damaging someone's computer "may be the only way you can teach somebody about copyrights. ...I'm all for destroying their machines. " [our Tax Dollars at work] ...Last year, Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., ignited a firestorm across the Internet over a proposal to give the entertainment industry new powers to disrupt downloads of pirated music and movies. ...lift[ing] civil and criminal penalties...
