Just askin'
I know; I don't get out enough so the SB half-time show comprised the majority of my exposure to pop "culture" for the last, oh, year or more. I gotta ask: what is the cultural significance of crotch grabbing? Please, help out a simple country girl. I want to understand. UPDATE: My friend, who works with little kids, said that, with the sound off [heh], it looked like how badly socialized 3 year olds dance.I believe you understand. You just want someone else to get the ball rolling (oops). It is just another symbol of defiance for the establishment. The “F word” the “Bird” and such are usually accompanied with an “in your face” expression on the part of the crotch grabber. An “Up yours” if you will. Or if it is meant to be a seductive signal then a “May I up yours?”.
At any rate it is nothing new. If you were ever a fan of the Doors or The Greatfull Dead or other hard rockers they have been doing it for the same reasons. To be outrageous, garner publicity and appeal to mentally undeveloped sub-adults that feel this difiance expresses their rage about their feckless lives.

These people believe the act is a transgression of the social order. They believe that it gives them “edge” or “cred” to act lewdly on camera. It’s a sentiment as old as rock and roll, probably older.
But it’s funny when you think of it as these guys checking to make sure their package is still there, or if Uncle Sam has taken a third of that like everything else.
