In case you were wondering...
Talking on a cell fone is *not* rude. Shouting is rude. Ignoring your friend/spouse/companion is rude. Those stupid ring tone songs are rude. And irritating. Which is rude. Bumping into people is rude. Not acknowledging people is only sometimes rude. [Depends on how/why they want to get your attention.] Sitting/standing alone at a table in a restaurant/cafe/coffee bar or on the street/in a line, talking in a normal, conversational tone to a person who is not physically present is not rude. If you are bothered by the idea that someone you've never even seen before is ignoring *you* to talk with someone who isn't even physically present -- you got bigger things to worry about than cell fones.I got zapped by an image a few weeks ago: a couple strolling down the street, each talking on cell phones to someone else—a way of being together and not actually being together.
It seemed extremely pregnant to me at the time, but somehow when you describe it, it falls flat. Maybe you had to be there—and even if you were . . . .

The only time I do mind it is when they do it while driving. As someone who used to drive for a living, you will never convince me this is a good idea.
