House Hearing
Random thoughts -- full notes below: Meyers: "You didn't need a leader standing over these people to remind them that what they were doing was illegal and immoral..." Schoomaker: "Discipline is doing what is right when no one is looking. This whole suggestion about tearing that prison building down. I see why Rummy is placing the decision firmly in the hands of the Iraqis -- if we did it,esp. now, it would look like a cover-up move. A denial or devaluation of what went on. Before or now. It strikes me that there needs to be more publicity for the things those Spirit of America people are doing there. Only 21 of 61 house committee members thought this important enuff to attend?? Apparently the command style practiced by that General was ...er, unconventional. Way to be a walking poster for women in the service, guurl. Rumsfeld: "The world is seeing what a democracy does. The world is seeing how people who believe in human rights behave." "How do we recover? We get up the next day and try to live better Over time truth wins out. We're not an evil society America is not what is wrong with the world why are people lined up to get in to this country because its better here than other places. We'll get by this -- I don't like this any better'n you do." So it appears to me, from what Meyers said, that the reputation of America is better with 140 or 150 other countries of the world than it is in Congress. There's a lot of folks in Congress who just ain't that swift, aren't there. Granted, those people were badly treated. Is it really appropriate to just give them money? I don't see how Rumsfeld resigning will solve this. "Go back and look at those pictures -- that is a problem so fundamental it won't matter if they have a good restaurant or a BX." Rumsfeld - "There are lots of good people who know exactly what the mission is. Ask our troops - they know what our mission is." ***Duke Cunningham -- "I sure hope someone prays for me as they try to stick the knife in..." slick. good description of leadership. "I wish the media would give the same focus to the atrocities committed by our enemy as they do to this case..." Rep Curt Weldon from PA Several statements about how much support Rumsfeld has amongst the military leads me to believe that a forced resignation would be corrosive.
