Ten innovations inspired by Star Trek

For a generation that grew up flicking imaginary communicators and saying “Beam me up, Scotty”...

  1. Cute.

An yeah, as some of the commentors noted, none of that stuff was originated on Trek but had been in Science Fiction literature for years (and even mainstream, if you count Dick Tracy). But Trek exposed them to people who had never even heard of “Scientifiction” before.

I remember one combined success and flub not mentioned. The “fweep-fweep” alarm siren. Several hospitals asked for recordings of it because it was found to cut through most of the noises ambient in hospitals: success! But no-one remembered where the sound had come from, so only a low-quality recording taken from the show could be supplied. Flub!
