FLASH -- First Amendment Repealed by House--FLASH
The Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2004, which passed 391-22, would give the Federal Communications Commission the ability to levy fines of up to $500,000 per violation, up from the current $27,500. Because many shows are syndicated on numerous stations around the country, fines could run into the millions of dollars. Broadcasters also could have their licenses revoked after a third violation.
You lose your license if you don't toe the line of what the Government "thinks" is "--decent--." Excuse me, "the fucking government!?!" Now, I heard somewhere -- oh, yeah, civics class -- that the airwaves belong to the people -- U 'n' ME -- not the government. I guess I hafta give back my A, eh?
Since I've been blogging, I have been paying pretty close attention to what goes on in the world; on a more consistent basis, and still this piece of paternalistic, totalitarian, crap shit slipped slimily, head-pattingly right by me.
It seems that the adults in this country have been cowed or guilted into allowing the Offendatti to stand around and scream like two year olds whenever their preconceptions about life are challenged. We've tried to be "nice" and "respected" their "feelings" instead of telling them to "Shut the fuck up and walk away if you're threatened 'offended.'" We've not taken the trouble to look behind the caterwalling to the philosophical and, yes, psychological underpinnings behind these easily "offended" points of view to see the silliness and the sickness. And we've allowed them to create a government fit for two year olds -- or "the proletariat."
And ya know how two-year-olds live their lives -- at the mercy of their CARETAKERS.
[This post is left-over from 3.13. I was feeling so discouraged and disgusted that I couldn't force myself to edit it. I'm still feeling that way but I'm also angry. I don't want to live in a country whose government treats its citizens with such disrespect.]
