Ya don’t give a man a fish:  ya teach him to fish

[introduced 12/7/2007] Mr. OBAMA (for himself, Mr. HAGEL, and Ms. CANTWELL) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations:

To require the President to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective of promoting the reduction of global poverty , the elimination of extreme global poverty , and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people worldwide, between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day.

House Action:
9/25/2007 12:33pm:  Passed/agreed to in House: On motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill, as amended Agreed to by voice vote.  (text: CR H10778-10779)

  1. I don’t suppose it’s occurred to anybody in the Senate that we are not responsible for the other 95% of the world’s population (US:300million, world: 6.4 billion), nor are we in a position to do much about it.

Unless, of course, we adopt all the roles they accuse us of: imperialism, hegemony, interfering in other country’s affairs, ...

We also note that these “Millennium Development Goals” are the work of the UN (boo, hiss):

    MDG

Are these goals Good Things?  Certainly.  But as the problems have been with us since Noah was a sailor, it’s unrealistic to think that anybody - or even everybody - can make a serious dent in them in less that 15 years.
