The Iron—it begins to glitter like lead
International business. Obama. Going to India.
The US would be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs. 900 crore approx) per day on President Barack Obama’s visit to the city.
whaaaaa!!!?!?!?
$200 million per day
whaaaaa!!!?!?!?
oh ...wait
White House spokesman Matt Lehrich responded, “The numbers reported in this article have no basis in reality. Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it’s safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated."
oh. well, then… nevermind.
I’m completely reassured.
So, what’s the point of this expensive/not-so-expensive jaunt?
A statement at the Taj Palace & Tower hotel to commemorate the victims of the Mumbai terrorist attacks. ...
a roundtable with entrepreneurs; a roundtable with some U.S. CEOs… and a speech…
future partnership that we’re trying to build with India and how it’s a relationship ...
visit a local school . ... a town hall with university students ... some talk on agriculture…
Humayun’s [mouseover linky for quickie] tomb.... dinner for the Obamas and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife…
Wreath-laying at Mahatma Gandhi’s grave. Bilateral meeting with Mr. Singh followed by a press conference. Meetings with Indian officials (Sonia Gandhi is in here somewhere, we assume) then an address to Parliament...
That’s gonna be Teh Big One—the India Speech. Here’s your India Buzzword Bingo Card. Play along with Martinis, coffee shots or HaagenDaz…

hm… I don’t see the word China. Mebbe that’s the UnSpoken—yanno, like the UnCola.
So what else?
... questions over the handling of nuclear material, the outsourcing of U.S. jobs and India’s status as a growing economic power, along with regional relations with Pakistan and Afghanistan…
But Rajendra Pachauri, the Nobel Peace laureate who heads the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, hopes the U.S. president has time to focus on clean energy too.
...“I think there’s a lot that’s happening in the U.S. which doesn’t necessarily follow from legislation,” he said,... “So while of course legislation would make things more effective, I don’t think one needs to wait for that. I think the executive branch does have a lot of powers, particularly now that the EPA can effectively regulate emissions of greenhouse gases.” ...
“I do believe that the two countries being democracies, where clearly you can’t use any sort of dictatorial methods to bring about change, have much in common in being able to come up with approaches that would certainly have a great deal of complimentarity. I believe for a variety of reasons there is much we can do together, but I don’t think one needs to wait for legislation before acting in the right direction.”
So we have that to look forward to.
wait. whaaaaa!!!?!?!?
On his 15-hour flight, the President can whip through five Bollywood movies that vividly bring new and old India to life. ... Quoting a line from Bollywood will enchant Indian audiences (just say “Chak de India” or “All is Well” and watch the crowds go wild)
So we’ll have that to watch for…
I think optics are gonna be big with this regime, so watch for the shots at historic places, with cute, native-y looking kids, Indian-y looking businessmen, and, of course, FLOTUS’ fabulous frocks.
Oh, and if ya see any shots of “green energy projects,” have a double on me.
Too bad he will not be shown breaking ground for one of the many new power plants there.
