Egypt

Teh Alexandrian Mob

President Hosni Mubarak imposed a curfew and ordered troops to back up police as they struggled to control crowds who flooded the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities on Friday to demand that he step down.

Here’s the help from The Progs:

From the Daily Beast, we have this helpful article:  Don’t Fear Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood [Yahoo link]

...what [Seymour Butts] Hersh told an audience in Doha, Qatar…

“how eight or nine neoconservative, radicals if you will, overthrew the American government.” ...

...That’s the attitude. We’re gonna change mosques into cathedrals. That’s an attitude that pervades, I’m here to say, a large percentage of the Joint Special Operations Command [JSOC].”

He further claimed that Gen. Stanley McChrystal, Vice Admiral William McRaven and others in the JSOC were members of the “Knights of Malta” and “Opus Dei,” two little known Catholic orders.

“They do see what they’re doing—and this is not an atypical attitude among some military—it’s a crusade, literally,”

All right—back to the world of Smart Diplomacy™:

“We are deeply concerned about the use of violence by Egyptian police and security forces against protesters,” Clinton said at the State Department, adding that the protesters also should avoid violence.

“We urge the Egyptian government to allow peaceful protests, and to reverse the unprecedented steps it has taken to cut off communications,” she said. Internet service in Egypt has been blocked almost completely, according to reports from the country.

Describing the United States as “a partner” with Egypt, Clinton urged Mubarak’s government “to engage immediately” with the Egyptian people on economic, political and social reforms.

Do I remember some other administration that waffled on a revolution in the M-East?  That turned out well, right?

  1. “. . . members of the “Knights of Malta” and “Opus Dei,” two little known Catholic orders.”

Opus Dei isn’t an “order” the way the Dominicans or Benedictines are.

The link to the Daily Beast story is “inoperative”.  I couldn’t find it on the DB, but here’a another source:

    High-ranking members of US military...

And here’s a more reasonable report:
    Seymour Hersh Unleashed"

“In a speech billed as a discussion of the Bush and Obama eras, New Yorker journalist Seymour Hersh delivered a rambling, conspiracy-laden diatribe ...”

Beside all that, the Knights of Malta is (or at least was) a military order.  So what’s the big Deal?

    From the news story:

“... but uncovering secret societies within the highest echelons of America’s military ...”

Neither Opus Dei nor the Knights of Malta are anything close to a “secret society”.  The Knights have been around since 1050 or so (and anybody who’s ever seen “The Matlese Falcon” knows who they are), and Opus Dei has a public presence, even a web site:
    Opus Dei

Back to Egypt:  If word gets around the the People can ride a President out of town on a rail, it just might set a bad precedent.  (Bad pun, Sort of.)
