Don't call us, we'll call you -- maybe on the weekend . . .
In a bigger-is-better approach to government, Bustamante proposed an $8 billion increase in taxes, which would be levied primarily on California businesses and wealthy taxpayers. [Bustamante] proposed increasing sin taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. [Bustamante] included $2 billion in program cuts, but he couldn't say which programs would be cut.
Bustamante proposed is taking his $8 billion tax increase directly to the voters if he can't get the state Legislature to pass it. Bustamante wants California businesses to pay $2.9 billion in increased property taxes. Bustamante budget does not propose to raise any new revenues from the American Indian tribes that are making millions off gambling operations around the state. Bustamante budget would also increase the highest income taxes on the top 4 percent of taxpayers. Bustamante vision for the state would be to increase power for unions and Indian tribes, impose job-killing taxes and regulation on businesses and enact the extreme-left social agenda of the Democrat-led legislature.
And these surprising statements from SFGate, of all people: "The idea of increasing taxes on big business may be appealing at first blush, but let's not forget how jobs are created (or killed)." And this: "But every penny the wealthy (or any of us) has to send to Sacramento or Washington is money they are not spending in the economy, giving to a local charity or investing..." Or [holy crap!] this: "We need a governor who will loosen the death grip the unions have on the state's educational system." Must be a new guy. Well: that clears that up.
