I was thinking that's a little over the top -- but, at least from Terry's POV, maybe not.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't taking on the responsibility for "lifting everyone up" 1] condescending? 2] intrusive? 3] disrespectful? ...just to mention a few. Wouldn't it be our job to lift ourselves up and the job of others to lift themselves up? Unless one assumes that others are too stoo-pud to understand "up," too incompetent to work toward "up," or too lazy to give a crap? This is the same kind of busy-body, smugly self-satisfied, righteously superior attitude that earned us the Ugly American title in the first place. [see the Marshall Plan] And she/they expect it to "win back" the "respect" of the "rest of the world" how?!?
