Committing Decent Bloggery
Thanks to Glenn Harlan Reynolds, whose article I found via Eric Brooks (International Heckling Day - funny marketing idea, personalized - worked, too, heh) I came across this quote. It's from James Lileks a while back:My time on the internet resembles eight hours at a coffeeshop stocked with every periodical in the world - if someone says "I read something stupid" or "there was this wonderful piece in the Atlantic" then conversation stops while you read the piece and make up your own mind.
Wonderful mental picture. Thet there feller surely can sling them words together, cain't he?
Something else I've discovered that I like; when a link opens a new window. that way I can continue to read the rest of he first article while the second loads. If there are more links I want to follow, they line up waiting for me. And the first piece is still at the bottom of the stack so I don't forget where I came from and can continue with it after I've gone haring off on the first tangent. Especially useful in blogs that do a lot of linkage. (And for those of us with slight ...uh attention issues. [like a puppy chasin' leaves in a windstorm])
For other *newbies* here is how it's done: [a href="" title="" target="_blank"][/a] (replacing [ ] with < > ) The title thing is what makes those little tool tip pop-ups. Put anything in there you want; yet another Art Form.
I like target=_blank, too, for a variety of reasons. I often like to cruise sites from someone’s sidebar or blogroll, but I always like to keep the original page open so that I can refer back to it. My husband, however, tells me that target=_blank is annoying because it opens too many windows, and makes the target=_blank blogger look bad, like they’re trying to make people keep their page open.
Different strokes, I guess. :D
Posted by kelley on 06/21/03 at 04:42 AMI vastly prefer to open a link in a new window when I surf (hold down the Shift key in IE, or the Ctrl key in Mozilla). When I discovered how to make my own links pop up in a new window, it was sort of a no brainer…
The thing that I use my own site for the most is as a portable bookmark list for when I am not at home. Again, I want a pop-up in a new window…
What I don’t understand is why it is not the default setting…
Posted by Andrew Cory on 06/21/03 at 08:45 AM*Swoon* this is exactly what I just decided I need for another project. And you provide the answer. Some might call it serendipity. I’d call it downright spooky!
Posted by Daisy on 06/21/03 at 10:56 AMI prefer to open a new window too. But something else I want underline here. You’re looking to be a very motivated person and projects should be builded around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done. http://www.success-biz-replica.com
