Big Brother Mother

Tracking units to monitor children and teenagers - disguised as watches, mobile phones and belts - have hit Australia to the outrage of civil libertarians and parent groups. They include a computer device and software that can record email and chatroom conversations and a clothing spray that can tell if teens are having sex. Australian company Internav's mobile phone-sized Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking device has emergency alarm button and software so parents can zoom in on a child's whereabouts using a home computer. It costs $895. ...Kid Safe System Locators, said his GPS devices, which will be in stores by Christmas, ...can be hidden in watches, belts and jewellery and cost from $600 to $700.

But since it is For The Children©, I'll probably still be accused of being "paranoid." Right, Andrew?

  1. There is something deeply wrong with people being able to delve into their children’s personal lives in this manner.

  2. Bah!
I won’t round all the edges off the world just to make it kiddy proof.  Hell, a few days ago I encourage a kid to slide down a staircase because it sounded fun…

No, the real problems happen when a stalker hacks into the kids clothing and tracks her from a distance, swooping down when the child is around the least amount of adults…

And that’s just the mischief a predator could get into with little thought.  I shudder to think what Ashcroft (or Reno, for you Right wing types) would do given such abilities…

Well said!  Or idiot-proof, for that matter.  Evolution must have her due. . .

Stalker hacks—of either kind, individual or govt.—are just what I had in mind.  It pays to be aware of one’s environment—and participate.

  4. I am concerned about the destruction of the family unit, replacing the trust by a fear of detection. Police states might find that technology useful, but patriotism there is rather scarce. Similarly, with families where you can’t roam freely and explore, you end up destroying a kid’s first experience with community and society.
