Next Up for confirmation:  Cass Sunstein [Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA)] aka “Regulatory Czar.” He’ be in charge of “overseeing” for the White House the “regulations” --which have the force of law, but are created by agencies unaccountable to The People, and barely accountable to Congress—like Departments of Interior, Agriculture, the FBI and the ATF.

...Mr. Sunstein said [Oct. 23, 2007], “My tentative suggestion is that the individual right to have guns as it’s being conceptualized now is best taken as a contemporary creation and a reflection of current fears - not a reading of civic-centered founding debates."...

Discussing the anti-gun laws in the District of Columbia, he said a critic of such strict gun control would say that a “trigger lock interferes with his efforts at self-defense against criminals. What on Earth does that have to do with the Second Amendment as originally understood?”

...

In a July 14 letter clarifying his positions at the request of [Saxby Chambliss of Georgia] Mr. Sunstein wrote: “Your first question involved the Second Amendment. I strongly believe that the Second Amendment creates an individual right to possess and use guns for purposes of both hunting and self-defense. I agree with the Supreme Court’s decision in the Heller case, clearly recognizing the individual right to have guns for hunting and self-defense. If confirmed, I would respect the Second Amendment and the individual right that it recognizes."

*sigh*

Harry Reid (D-Nevada) has scheduled a vote for Wednesday, September 9...

Senator Johnny Isakson (R-Georgia), ... is attempting to place a hold on the appointment. To force the confirmation vote, Senator Reid has scheduled a vote of cloture [requiring 60 votes]

Ed Lasky: Cass Sunstein’s despicable ideas on regulating the internet

[from Lasky:] In “On Rumors,” Sunstein reviews how views get cemented in one camp even when people are presented with persuasive evidence to the contrary. He worries that we are headed for a future in which “people’s beliefs are a product of social networks working as echo chambers in which false rumors spread like wildfire.” That future, though, is already here, according to Sunstein. “We hardly need to imagine a world, however, in which people and institutions are being harmed by the rapid spread of damaging falsehoods via the Internet,” he writes. “We live in that world. What might be done to reduce the harm?"
