Want to feel a little better about your fellow humans amidst all this pushing and hauling? Read a little about the Free Store. It's in Brooklyn, yet, and seems to have brought out aspects of personal responsibility and contribution to community better than any park or monument.

“When I first opened the store, I thought for sure it would fail within three months, ...But it didn’t happen that way at all. In fact, donations started pouring in almost right away.”

“Ninety percent of the cleaning and arranging is done by volunteers completely unsolicited,” Baldwin said. “There’s a sense of responsibility that people have. You see it here all the time – the givers and the takers are the same people.”
