Last Thing Fer Sure!

but this is too important to lose track of.  again.

I saw this before and Snopes-ed it [TRUE] but then misplaced it and got distracted.  *eye roll*

Thanks to Babalu for bringing it back to my attention—it’s too god not to post.

This letter sent to Tennessee Senator Bill Frist from a retired border patrol
agent, and it has more common sense than all the bull being spewed from the
Senate, with the exception of a few sensible representatives.

Dear Senator Frist:

There is a huge amount of propaganda and myths circulating about illegal
aliens, particularly illegal Mexican, Salvadorian, Guatemalan and Honduran
aliens.

#1.

Illegal aliens generally do NOT want U.S. citizenship. Americans are very vain
thinking that everybody in the world wants to be a U.S. citizen. Mexicans, and
other nationalities want to remain citizens of their home countries while
obtaining the benefits offered by the United States such as employment,
medical care, in-state tuition, government subsidized housing and free
education for their offspring. Their main attraction is employment and their
loyalty usually remains at home. They want benefits earned and subsidized by
middle class Americans. What illegal aliens want are benefits of American
residence without paying the price.

#2.

There are no jobs that Americans won’t do. Illegal aliens are doing jobs that
Americans can’t take and still support their families. Illegal aliens take low
wage jobs, live dozens in a single residence home, share expenses and send
money to their home country. There are no jobs that Americans won’t do for a
decent wage.

#3.

Every person who illegally entered this nation left a home. They are NOT
homeless and they are NOT Americans. Some left jobs in their home countries.
They come to send money to their real home as evidenced by the more than 20
billion dollars sent out of the country each year by illegal aliens. These
illegal aliens knowingly and willfully entered this nation in violation of the
law and therefore assumed the risk of detection and deportation. Those who
brought their alien children assumed the responsibility and risk on behalf of
their children.

#4.

Illegal aliens are NOT critical to the economy. Illegal aliens constitute less
than 5% of the workforce. However, they reduce wages and benefits for lawful
U.S. residents.

#5.

This is NOT an immigrant nation. There are 280 million native born Americans.
While it is true that this nation was settled and founded by immigrants (legal
immigrants), it is also true that there is not a nation on this planet that
was not settled by immigrants at one time or another.

#6.

The United States is welcoming to legal immigrants. Illegal aliens are not
immigrants by definition. The U.S. accepts more lawful immigrants every year
than the rest of the world combined.

#7.

There is no such thing as the “Hispanic vote”. Hispanics are white, brown,
black and every shade in between. Hispanics are Republicans, Democrats,
Anarchists, Communists, Marxists and Independents. The so-called “Hispanic
vote” is a myth. Pandering to illegal aliens to get the Hispanic vote is a
dead end.

#8.

Mexico is NOT a friend of the United States. Since 1848 Mexicans have resented
the United States. During World War I Mexico allowed German Spies to operate
freely in Mexico to spy on the U.S. During World War II Mexico allowed the
Axis powers to spy on the U.S. from Mexico. During the Cold War Mexico allowed
spies hostile to the U.S. to operate freely. The attack on the Twin Towers in
2001 was cheered and applauded all across Mexico. Today Mexican school
children are taught that the U.S. stole California, Arizona, new Mexico and
Texas. If you don’t believe it, check out some Mexican textbooks written for
their schoolchildren.

#9.

Although some illegal aliens enter this country for a better life, there are 6
billion people on this planet. At least 1 billion of those live on less than
one dollar a day. If wanting a better life is a valid excuse to break the law
and sneak into America, then let’s allow those one billion to come to America
and we’ll turn the USA into a Third World nation overnight. Besides, there are
280 million native born Americans who want a better life. I’ll bet Bill Gates
and Donald Trump want a better life. When will the USA lifeboat be full? Since
when is wanting a better life a good reason to trash another nation?

#10.

There is a labor shortage in this country. This is a lie. There are hundreds
of thousands, if not millions, of American housewives, senior citizens,
students, unemployed and underemployed who would gladly take jobs at a decent
wage.

#11.

It is racist to want secure borders. What is racist about wanting secure
borders and a secure America? What is racist about not wanting people to sneak
into America and steal benefits we have set aside for legal aliens, senior
citizens, children and other legal residents? What is it about race that
entitles people to violate our laws, steal identities, and take the American
Dream without paying the price? For about four decades American politicians
have refused to secure our borders and look after the welfare of middle class
Americans. These politicians have been of both parties. A huge debt to
American society has resulted. This debt will be satisfied and the interest
will be high. There has already been riots in the streets by illegal aliens
and their supporters. There will be more. You, as a politician, have a choice
to offend the illegal aliens who have stolen into this country and demanded
the rights afforded to U.S. citizens or to offend those of us who are
stakeholders in this country. The interest will be steep either way. There
will be civil unrest. There will be a reckoning. Do you have the courage to do
what is right for America? Or, will you bow to the wants and needs of those
who don’t even have the right to remain here? There will be a reckoning. It
will come in November of this year, again in 2008 and yet again in 2010. We
will not allow America to be stolen by third world agitators and thieves.

Grassroots on FIRE!

for your perusal and edification:

To: President George W. Bush, Honorable Members of Congress.

As a concerned citizen, I believe illegal immigration is a national security crisis of the highest order and also poses a long-term threat to the American way of life. I am calling on Congress and the President to:

#1—Secure our borders. As first priority, America must stop the flow of illegal immigration by investing all necessary resources in securing our borders. Also, existing immigration laws must be enforced as an essential component of our Homeland Security.

#2—No Amnesty. I oppose any form of amnesty for illegal aliens, including the “temporary worker” proposal or any proposals that grant legal residency status or citizenship to illegal aliens.

(Check each issue that you support)
Aggressive deportation. Immediate investment in aggressive effort to deport the 12 million illegal immigrants currently within our borders – if you’re caught, you are sent back.

No benefits. Erect a wall of separation between illegal aliens (and their children) and tax-dollar paid benefits reserved for U.S. citizens and legal aliens. I support H.R. 418 that prohibits illegal aliens from being issued drivers licenses and prevents terrorists from abusing the asylum laws of the United States.

No work. Stricter punishment of U.S. businesses that knowingly employ illegal aliens. Establish national database of legal immigrants to assist both public and private sectors in this effort.

English first. Legislation that establishes English as the required and preeminent language throughout the United States. Public and private sectors cannot be required to provide services in alternative languages.

No Birthright Citizenship. Illegals flood to the U.S. simply to have babies—which are then granted citizenship. Changing the current law is certain to curtail the illegal traffic.

Isn't this actually about *Integration*?

assimilation is such a Borg word...

When we picture those masses and masses of millions and millions of illegal Senate-blessed aliens in the US, we see—well, what I see every time I go to the other part of town:  Little Mexico.  I see people who aren’t ‘struggling to become Americans.’ I see people who brought their T’urd World country with ‘em.  And demanding of US to cater to ‘em

When I wander around the rest of town, I see, here and there, the Middle Eastern family who runs the [wait for it] 7-11, a few Mexican families owning restaurants, the Asian family who owns and runs a string of the best dang strawberry fields you ever drooled over.  There’re some Middle Europeans at another deli/restaurant downtown, and ...well, you get the idea.  They’re Americans.  They brought something to the party.  They joined the party.

Those living in Little Mexico don’t seem to have that goal in mind.  So isn’t it really about their raacism?  Isn’t it a matter of US wanting them integrated and them declining the offer?  Make something soundbyte-worthy outta that Teddy.

At a joint meeting of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce [noooooo that’s not raacist—don’t be silly! *replaces “whites only” sign on water fountain*] and the California Chamber of Commerce yesterday;

Boasting that his country’s economy is stronger than ever before, Mexican President Vicente Fox told California business leaders Friday morning that Mexico has become a strong economic partner with the U.S. after three decades of struggle.

...what with all the US$ wandering Sud.  Up to #2 source, iddn’t it—right after OOOOOIIIL?

"More that anything freedom is the driving force of change and modernization in Mexico..."

Yeah—the freedom to leave.

We’ve built a solid foundation for growth through job creation and a reduction of poverty,” he said, [rolling his eyes Northward]

While applauding the U.S. Senate for passing an immigration bill Thursday that would give millions of Mexicans in this country a way to stay here legally, Fox urged support for the economy of Mexico.

Is there any other time in history that the leader of a country has claimed pride in and touted as a success the fact that 1/10 of his population has fled his country for lack of work?
[no, really—I’m too history-challenged to know this.  he’p me!]

"We’ve built an efficient, quality workforce,” he said. “

Yeah.  I see ‘em every day—hanging around Home Depot parking lot and at a certain intersection just north of town.

Mexico is there, waiting for your investment."

Thanks, I already invested today. *burrito burp* [a ladylike *burrito burp*]

Ok—get out the duck tape for this next one: [seriously]
[don’t say I didn’t warn ya]

Fox also spoke briefly about the respect and pride his country has for the Mexican immigrants who have come to work in the U.S., and he said he is excited about Thursday’s vote in the U.S. Senate on immigration reform which he said will help support immigrants in fulfilling their destiny.

I warned ya.

I could give this pompous asno such a bofetada!

presuntuoso putz

Mexican President Vicente Fox [El Zorro] on Thursday called the U.S. Senate’s landmark vote on immigration policy a “monumental step forward” that marks a historic moment in the relationship between Mexico and the U.S.

“It is a moment that millions of families have been hoping for. This is the moment that millions of people have been working for,” he told a joint session of the California Legislature. [*gah*] “Today’s historic vote is a monumental step forward, but we recognize that there is more debate ahead.”

..."I stand here before you, above all, firmly convinced that as in other crucial moments of our history, our shared vision, commitment and courage can help us take yet another step forward to the benefit of our two great nations,”...

G’head—lecture down to us summore, Moustache Muchacho.

Grass is green; sky is blue

what’s not to get??!!?

While Vicente El Zorro Fox calls us all raaaacist and, aided by his new bestest friends the ACLU, threatens to sue US if any “miiigrants” of his are stopped at our border, things are a leedle differante in ol’ MeHeeCo Meh-ee-KKKo.

Even as Mexico presses the United States to grant unrestricted citizenship to millions of undocumented Mexican migrants, its officials at times calling U.S. policies “xenophobic,” ... Foreign-born Mexicans can’t hold seats in either house of the congress. They’re also banned from state legislatures, the Supreme Court and all governorships. Many states ban foreign-born Mexicans from spots on town councils. And Mexico’s Constitution reserves almost all federal posts, and any position in the military and merchant marine, for “native-born Mexicans.” ...Baja California still requires candidates for the state legislature to prove both their parents were native born.

...Speaking of the hundreds of thousands of Central Americans who enter Mexico each year, chauffeur Arnulfo Hernandez, 57, said: “The ones who want to reach the United States, we should send them up there. But the ones who want to stay here, it’s usually for bad reasons, because they want to steal or do drugs.”

...The foreign-born make up just 0.5 percent of Mexico’s 105 million people, compared with about 13 percent in the United States, which has a total population of 299 million. Mexico grants citizenship to about 3,000 people a year, compared to the U.S. average of almost a half million.

image
*click* for larger

[so why aren’t those illegal aliens from the Middle East counted?  Or are alla those pryer rugs from Mexican Moslems?]

Roughly 10 percent of Mexico’s population of about 107 million is now living in the United States, estimates show. About 15 percent of Mexico’s labor force is working in the United States. One in every 7 Mexican workers migrates to the United States.

“There is no scenario outside of catastrophic attack on the United States that would make immigration stop,” said Demetrios Papademetriou, president of the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank.

...Last year, Mexico received a record $20 billion in remittances from migrant workers. That is equal to Mexico’s 2004 income from oil exports. ...The money Mexican migrants send home almost equals the U.S. foreign aid budget for the entire world...

What's Arabic for 'coinkydink'?

I’m sure it’s just a timing-gifted occurrence

Thing A:

WASHINGTON (CNN)—A Guantanamo Bay prisoner staged a fake suicide attempt to draw U.S. troops into a room where they were attacked by other prisoners, military leaders at the camp told reporters Friday.

U.S. troops used rubber bullets and a sponge grenade to subdue the prisoners, who were armed with improvised weapons such as sticks, light fixtures and parts of fans.

“The detainees had slickened the floor of their block with feces, urine and soapy water in an attempt to trick the guards,” said Rear Adm. Harry Harris, the commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo. “They then assaulted the guards."

Thing B:

(CNN)—The United States should close its jail at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and any secret prisons it may be running, a U.N. panel said Friday.

“The state party should cease to detain any person at Guantanamo Bay and close this detention facility, permit access by the detainees to judicial process or release them as soon as possible,” the U.N. Committee Against Torture said in an 11-page report issued in Geneva, Switzerland.
[what’d they say about those kidnappings and beheading videos?]

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat who was the only person to argue against the proposal on the floor yesterday, worried that it would cost too much. The San Diego fence, he noted, wound up being 200 percent over budget.

“The real cost ended up being $3.8 million per mile,” said Mr. Kennedy, who has been the principal backer of Boston’s “Big Dig,” a highway tunnel funded largely by the federal government that has run about $1 billion per mile.

"US"* Senate -- taken over by aliens

don’t bother lookin’ around for the pods...

image

How many surprises do ya figure have been slipped into those 6-freakin’-hundred pages of the Senate’s Amnesty Bill?

Here’s one:
The Senate’s handiwork this week deserves far more attention than it has received,... Among the little-noticed provisions in the Senate bill is one that shatters the economic rationale for millions of new unskilled, affordable foreign workers. When a bill depends on Democratic votes for passage, the unions are empowered to transform the business community’s demand for “cheap labor” into a guarantee that guest-workers will be among the most costly labor in the workforce.

The bill extends Davis-Bacon “prevailing wage” provisions—typically the area’s union wage that applies only to construction on federal projects under current law—to all occupations (e.g. roofers, carpenters, electricians, etc.) covered by Davis-Bacon. So guest-workers (but not citizen workers) must be paid Davis-Bacon wage rates for jobs in the private sector if their occupation is covered by Davis-Bacon. Presumably because Senate Democrats’ union bosses thought this provision too modest, an amendment by Senator Barack Obama, approved by voice vote, extended Davis-Bacon wages rates to all private work performed by guest workers, even if their occupations are not covered by Davis-Bacon.

Now, I’m no economist—hell; I can hardly spell it.  But I think this bodes ill for my kids’ future.  Have I missed something?

Toaddy Kennedy:  Their money sits in the Social Security Administration waiting to be matched with an eligible beneficiary, and once those workers establish the eligibility, how in all fairness can we deny them the credit for their past contributions?

Coming from a fella who has never once met an actual consequence of his choices, that might make sense.  OTOH, some of us are juuuust old fashioned and mean enough to think that folks oughtn’t profit from illegal behaviors.

“There are 12 million Mexicans on the other side, 12 million people who live every day in anguish about the need for a reform to let them live peacefully,” said Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez.

Mexico wants the United States to make it easier for immigrants to become legal and approve a guest worker program, instead of concentrating on tightening the border.

Responses to Bush's suggestions

all emphasis mine—e-C

“I don’t understand why the United States must take such a repressive attitude toward us,” said Agustin Melgar, 45, who works in the same open-air market as Martinez near Chapultepec Park in the city center. “It’s insulting. We all know there’s a mutual demand: The gringos need our cheap labor, and we want better pay."

Alrighty, thennn.  Beaner.

Ruben Aguilar, a spokesman for Mexican President Vicente Fox, said Monday that a security-first policy at the border would not solve the problems created by illegal immigration. Fox has said he prefers a plan that would offer some form of legal status for all undocumented Mexicans now in the USA.

He also said he would prefer to be Presidente de MeHeeeCo for life so he could have flan for breakfast every day.  “And stop calling me Zorro!”

Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez warned that the United States might face lawsuits if the increased troop presence on the border resulted in human rights abuses. “If we see the National Guard starting to directly participate in detaining people ... we would immediately start filing lawsuits through our consulates,” he told Radio Red, a Mexico City radio station.

Mexican raadio -wo- wo- wo- wo… whaaat?  stop abusing my human rights!

Fox’s spokesman, Ruben Aguilar, said Mexico had no choice but to respect the action.

“It is a sovereign decision,” he said. “We can’t interfere."

Oy my achin’ ....

“...it’s an insult to Mexicans This discussion clearly lacks foresight. It ignores the fact that no matter how tight you make the border, people will still find a way to cross."

Oh?  We’ll sí ‘bout that…

In a migrant shelter in Ciudad Juarez, a group of 10 Central Mexicans and Central Americans watched a soap opera while Bush’s speech was broadcast live on the other channel.

People here have more important things to do then watch Bush,” said Carlos Amado Luarca, a Dominican monk who works in the shelter. “This plan to send soldiers is one more sign of the decadence of the American empire."

ok—that *must have* lost something in the translation… no?  por favor?

..."Soldiers in the border? That won’t stop me. I’ll swim the river and jump the wall. I’m going to arrive in the United States”... “...[an] aggressive action, more than anything because the migrant is not a criminal or a terrorist....” “...a government that supposedly lobbies for world peace is now acting against defenseless migrants ..."

image

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico

Mexicans dismiss U.S. plans to send National Guard troops to the border as a futile effort that will only fuel the booming drug- and migrant-smuggling industry.

And with heavily armed Mexican soldiers in this violent border city, some worry the U.S. troop buildup could spark confrontations in an area where it is often difficult to tell where Mexico ends and the United States begins.

Who is this “some” who has alla these worries?  Please—let’s find them, give ‘em a nice cup of tea and a Hooked on Phonics [English edition] so they can learn a little more and worry a little less.

"It makes me a little scared,” said [Gilberto Areola], 54, looking at the walled border as he stood in his doorway. “A stray bullet could affect us since we live so close to the line. I think this could cause more violence."

They’re gonna be doing ‘support services,’ Bertie.

Ken Roth, executive director of New York-based Human Rights Watch, told reporters in Mexico City that he was “deeply concerned about the idea of militarizing the border.”

“Whenever you introduce troops—and the National Guard are troops—you risk abuse,” he said. “The Bush administration has not been terribly good at giving signals to the military about the proper treatment of people in custody."

Lookie here, Kenny Boy—quit believin’ whatcha read on Kos and extrapolating it all over hell and gone, m’kay?

While Mexico has stepped up efforts against drug, weapons and people smugglers, it leaves migrants alone; its citizens have the right to walk up to the border, and once they cross they are out of Mexican territory.

Nice finagle, Vicente.

image

In January, Texas authorities hunting drug traffickers came across heavily armed men dressed in Mexican military garb and chased them back across the border. The Mexican government said the men were drug smugglers disguised as soldiers

“My dupe was an innocent dope.” Not much difference, really…

Nuevo Laredo City Council member Jose Francisco Chavira said he’s considering organizing a boycott of U.S. goods to protest the plan.

“I see it as an act of intimidation, an act that is part of a plan to build a giant wall along the border, like Bush wants,” he said.

G’head, Josie.  Knock yerself out.

Yeah—that Nuevo Laredo; “a stage where Mexican organized crime demonstrates its immense power to corrupt, kill, and make money.”

A Firm Grasp of the Obvious is the cornerstone of Sanity

a tenuous, ethereal, illusory grasp, OTOH...

*Still Dodging Immigration’s Truths Robert Samuelson

There is much muddle to our immigration debate. The central problem is not illegal immigration. It is undesirably high levels of poor and low-skilled immigrants, whether legal or illegal, most of whom are Hispanic. Immigrants are not all the same. An engineer making $75,000 annually contributes more to the American economy and society than a $20,000 laborer. On average, the engineer will assimilate more easily.

... a respected immigration scholar—said this of low-skilled immigrants:

“Their presence in the labor market increases competition for low-skilled jobs, reducing the earnings of low-skilled native-born workers… Because of their low earnings, low-skilled immigrants also tend to pay less in taxes than they receive in public benefits, such as income transfers (e.g., the earned income tax credit, food stamps), public schooling for their children, and publicly provided medical services. Thus while the presence of low-skilled immigrant workers may raise the profits of their employers, they tend to have a negative effect on the well-being of the low-skilled native-born population, and on the native economy as a whole.”

Hardly anyone is discussing these issues candidly. It is politically inexpedient to do so. We can be a lawful society and a welcoming society simultaneously, to use the president’s phrase, but we cannot be a welcoming society for limitless numbers of Latin America’s poor without seriously compromising our own future—and, indeed, the future of many of the Latinos already here. Yet, that is precisely what the president and many senators (Democratic and Republican) support by endorsing large “guest worker” programs and an expansion of today’s system of legal visas. In practice these proposals would result in substantial increases of low-skilled immigrants.

How fast can they assimilate? We cannot know, but we can consult history. It is sobering. In 1972 Hispanics were 5 percent of the U.S. population and their median household income was 74 percent of that of non-Hispanic white households. In 2004 Hispanics were 14 percent of the population, and their median household income was 70 percent of the level of non-Hispanic whites. These numbers suggest that rapid immigration of low-skilled workers and rapid assimilation are at odds. Some immigrant families make huge advances, but many don’t and newcomers represent a constant drag.

...economist Chiswick rightly argued that we should ... give preferences to skilled immigrants. We should be smart about the future; right now, we’re not.

...People who don’t think there will be conflicts between older beneficiaries and younger taxpayers—Hispanic or not—are deluding themselves. People who imagine there won’t be more conflicts between growing numbers of poor Latinos and poor African Americans for jobs and political power are also deluding themselves.
