Pomegranate Republic
Lemmings Winning
CA has no budget. CA is handing out IOUs. CA is accepting those IOUs as tax payments. The Legislature today is considering:
a commission to serve the marketing interests of the blueberry industry. Another bill defines “honey" to mean the natural food product resulting from the harvest of nectar by honey bees, and a third bill adopts regulations establishing definitions and standards for 100-percent pomegranate juice.
Which led to one of the all-time leading top wonderment of sound bites:
"The governor is not against condiments. The governor’s not against fruits of any kind,"
As the Assembly Speaker wanders the capital, refusing to play, and Da Gobernator tries to herd that bunch of rabid cats back toward the question of a budget,
Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez (D-Fresno) called Governor Schwarzenegger’s criticism “childish"
Statewide *facepalm*

Facts = "Unhelpful"
consenseless
...one of a steady drizzle of events planned to stoke up alarm in the run-up to the UN’s major conference on climate change in Copenhagen next December… Top of the agenda at a meeting of the Polar Bear Specialist Group… will be the need to produce a suitably scary report on how polar bears are being threatened with extinction by man-made global warming.
...Dr Mitchell Taylor has been researching the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years, as both an academic and a government employee.
Dr Taylor had obtained funding to attend this week’s meeting of the PBSG, but this was voted down by its members because of his views on global warming. The chairman, Dr Andy Derocher, a former university pupil of Dr Taylor’s, frankly explained in an email (which I was not sent by Dr Taylor) that his rejection had nothing to do with his undoubted expertise on polar bears: “it was the position you’ve taken on global warming that brought opposition”.
Dr Taylor was told that his views running “counter to human-induced climate change are extremely unhelpful”.

...what is actually happening in the Arctic. The average temperature at midsummer is still below zero, the latest date that this has happened in 50 years of record-keeping. After last year’s recovery from its September 2007 low, this year’s ice melt is likely to be substantially less than for some time. The bears are doing fine.

Shocked! Shocked, I tell you!
duh doh!
Like giant sentinels, dozens of wind turbines straddle the mountain ridges near Sicily’s infamous mafia stronghold of Corleone. But despite a strong breeze rippling the leaves in groves of olive and fig trees, the soaring blades of the turbines have stood motionless for over a year.
...Just who approved, built and sold these renewable energy projects, which were developed on the basis of public subsidies, has become the subject of investigation for Sicily’s anti-Mafia magistrates, who are trying to keep track of organised crime’s latest bid to move into mainstream business.
“Pelosi” is an Italian name, iddn’t it? How ‘bout “D’Alesandro?”
oh, no reason…
Oh! Woe to the Poor Polar Bears!
looking for rescue
The 98-page report, co-authored by EPA analyst Alan Carlin, pushed back on the prospect of regulating gases like carbon dioxide as a way to reduce global warming. Carlin’s report argued that the information the EPA was using was out of date, and that even as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have increased, global temperatures have declined.
[emph mine—e~C]“He came out with the truth. They don’t want the truth at the EPA,” Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., a global warming skeptic, told FOX News, saying he’s ordered an investigation. “We’re going to expose it.”
Good luck with that.
According to internal e-mails that have been made public by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, Carlin’s boss told him in March that his material would not be incorporated into a broader EPA finding and ordered Carlin to stop working on the climate change issue. The draft EPA finding released in April lists six greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, that the EPA says threaten public health and welfare.
Sticking to Teh Narrative—at all costs.

Won’t you help rescue the polar bears from the attack of Teh Stupid?
Tks, Joe!
bang-up job

Shares of major metal manufacturers traded sharply lower Monday, a day after Vice President Joe Biden said the White House “misread” the economy, prompting concerns that an economic recovery could be slower than expected.
ok - lemme get this right. You say that this “simulus,” all of which is borrowed money, all of which takes money out of the private sector [where money is made], most of which isn’t even spent, most of which is slated to be spent on useless pork, hasn’t benefitted the US economy??? Rly?!?!?!? How could that be?
And you “don’t know” whether or not you want to do it AGAIN?

At this rate, the only manufacturer with investment potential is Red Rubber Noses, Inc.
WTF?!?
how’z it our problem?!?
I, for one, support the constitution of that constitutional republic.
"I’m doing everything I can,” Zelaya said live on Venezuela’s Telesur television. “If I had a parachute I would immediately jump out of this plane."
Works for me.... without the silk.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Zelaya’s key backer, has said he suspended key shipments of oil to Honduras, which he said would drive up gasoline prices.
“Chavez, Zelaya’s key backer” oooo—that’s gonna sting ∏eh iW∅n©
"From tomorrow the responsibility will fall on the powers, particularly the United States,” Zelaya added.
erm… we “don’t meddle,” remember, Pal Amigo?

ToDaZeD Stated Goal -vs- Actual Goal
so what is it?
I gotta admit - I don’t even see the pretense-goal, here.
President Barack Obama and Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev on Monday agreed a target of cutting vast Cold War arsenals of deployed nuclear warheads by around a third from current levels to 1,500-1,675 each. ...25 operationally deployed warheads below a range of 1,700-2,200, which both sides had already committed to reach by 2012 under the 2002 Moscow Treaty.
So the point is… what, again? [FotoOps aside]
... the Kremlin is deeply opposed to U.S. plans for a missile defense system in Europe. ... Washington says the system is intended to protect the United States and its allies against a possible Iranian missile attack but Russia argues that the system could be used against its nuclear arsenal as well.
Isn’t that a declaration that Russia wants to be able to nuke Europe at will and unopposed? Why is no one saying that?
...George W. Bush showed little interest in a successor treaty to START-1, arguing that it was not necessary. Obama, however, has made nuclear disarmament a priority.
Ok—other than gratuitous shots at Dubya[MEBHF - May Everything Be His Fault] the point is....? Like I’m supposta believe that the Russkis will keep their word, disarm, forego any aggression ever, and never ever sell their leftovers to their puppets friends like Iran or alQ? Pull the other one; it’s got skittles on’t.
Officials say an agreement on a START treaty that slashed nuclear weapons would help Washington and Moscow to set an example to other countries ahead of talks next year on revising the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Rly? You think you’ll look like a dork asking the NorKs to give up their nukes without giving up some of your own? What planet are you from? The simple fact that you have ‘em in the first place is the ONLY thing that gives the NorKs any reason whatsoever to even pretend to look like they’re listening to you.
Yer not dealing with some overly-pacified Upper West Side matron trained in school-yard ‘debate’ where “No, you!” is considered a top notch come-back. These people don’t share one of your perceptions—I’m not even sure if they think the world is round. And you’re acting like yer dealing with people to whom bringing the “wrong” wine is a lethal snub.
Get. A. Grip.

I.O.U.
actual responsibility 100 year old apologies
Now that California IOUs are becoming a tradable financial instrument, I guess the screeching rabble ‘tard hordes state legislature feels comfortable moving on to more pressing business than mere bill paying; people who were not born yet apologizing for things done to people who are no longer alive.
Legislators are considering issuing a formal apology to Chinese Americans for official acts of discrimination, such as banning cultural practices and barring interracial marriage, dating back to the 1800s…
Assemblyman Paul Fong, D-Sunnyvale ... said “it’s never too late” to apologize for past discrimination and said it will help to educate young Chinese and Asian Americans who might not know this piece of history.
Unfortunately the actual Chinese lack such soft hearts.
Chinese authorities announced today that some 140 people were killed and more than 800 wounded in protests that roiled Urumqi, the capital of China’s far western Xinjiang province, on July 5. According to the official news agency Xinhua, Urumqi police chief Liu Yaohua told a press conference that the number of dead was still rising and that there had been extensive damage to property.
...Liu told the official news agency that rioters burned 261 motor vehicles and about 200 shops yesterday in violence that was, according to an earlier Xinhua report, “masterminded from overseas by the separatist World Uighur Congress (WUC) led by Rebiya Kadeer.”
...Alim Seytoff, a spokesman for the WUC, a Washington-based Uighur exile group founded by Kadeer, denied that the group had any role in organizing the protests. ... said the demonstrations were a reaction to a June 26 incident at a factory in Guangdong province, where two Uighur workers were beaten to death by Han Chinese colleagues.
Yep. Those Uighurs.

POTUS to Senate: You Are Optional
gettin’ it now?
With the clock running out on a new US-Russian arms treaty before the previous Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, expires on December 5, a senior White House official said Sunday said that the difficulty of the task might mean temporarily bypassing the Senate’s constitutional role in ratifying treaties by enforcing certain aspects of a new deal on an executive levels and a “provisional basis” until the Senate ratifies the treaty.
So the Senate would “have to” pass it? Or it won’t matter one way or t’other what the Senate would do…
Senate = Rope-Handled Shovel
*listens for outcry from Senate*
This *Is* "Change"
and I can hardly freakin’ believe it...
So Palin quit. What I heard her say was that not only was it taking too high a toll on her family but it was taking too much of AK taxpayer time & $$ to fight it. And she didn’t believe that was fair nor morally responsible in her position as Governor to continue.
I admire that. What shakes me to my strappy little sandals is who won in this dealio and how they did it. The DNC operatives, with full cooperation of the MSM and nutroots, just stood there and threw bushels of bullshiite at her until she had to go away.
And what would prevent them from doing that to any other candidate—for any other office, national to local?
Completely intentional; completely dishonest; and completely impossible to defend against. Not one—not ONE—“journalist” made any effort to dig into the who/where/what of the “ethics complaint” filers—that we know of. Not one piece outlining their identity, their baselessness, their pattern, their intent. Not one youngun, looking for their Big Break story thought to “investigate” how such “corruption” could have gone on unnoticed for the first half of Palin’s governorship and only have come to light after she hit the national scene? No one was curious how so much bullshite could have been flung—yet none of it stuck? None? Isn’t that kinda unusual? Yet no one thought to investigate a big story like that?
Not ONE? Rly?
Why? Did someone/anyone start on such a piece and get warned off? Were the same tactics threatened against them? Or other, more immediate tactics?
This game-changing tactic, against which we must find a workable, adequate defense, will change the political areana. But, tell ya the truth, I cannot think of how to fight it.
[That’s not to say politics has not heretofore been dirty—duh. But a planned barrage of baseless bullshite, each piece of which is winnable on its own merits, but the whole of which, by sheer volume, is not? Stinks of Cloward-Piven, no?
Palin is toast, insofar as any higher elected office; but anyone else who emerges from the ranks will be open to the same kind of thuggery. And I imagine, now that it’s worked on the national scale, we will see it on state and local scales. It’s in the playbook. It worked. It will be used.
All we can do, now, is name it in her honor: being “Palined.”
And, somehow, raise a defense. Although reason, fact and honor has a tough time in the face of the volume of a maddened hoard of barbarians.
Tacticists?
