"Choices"
out of ‘chaos’ comes opportunity
Like in Nature, yanno?
[Steyn:]
President Obama fell back on one of his favorite rhetorical tricks: “But I also know,” he wrote, “that we need not choose between a chaotic and unforgiving capitalism and an oppressive government-run economy. That is a false choice that will not serve our people or any people.”
Really? ....

ToDaZeD Things that make ya go "Hmmm..."
*face palm* edition

When President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. meet for their standing Friday lunch engagement, Mr. Obama always picks the cuisine — a subtle break from previous administrations in which the president and the vice president typically ordered off a menu, and a reminder, if any was needed, about who is in charge.
“The dietary bar is set by the president,” said Ron Klain, Mr. Biden’s chief of staff, who recently fielded a prelunch query from the White House kitchen about whether Mr. Biden wanted sour cream with his tacos (he did). “Biden eats anything...."
hm…
The description (“Biden eats anything”) extends to the heaping plate of policy assignments the vice president has been served in recent weeks. He has been charged with overseeing the distribution of the $787 billion authorized by the economic stimulus bill, heading the White House’s “middle-class task force” ...
At one January meeting to discuss the budget, Mr. Biden railed that the government was in no fiscal shape to pursue a health care overhaul this year — to the dismay of many present and others who heard about it.
The vice president later backed off, but Mr. Obama — who disagreed strongly with the view — has come to see Mr. Biden as a useful contrarian in the course of decision-making.

Here’s some ammo for your next encounter with a random vegan-ist:
The non-profit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published a report this week, according to which PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), famous for denuded support of ethical treatment of animals, killed 95 percent of pets in its care during 2008. ...which is why the CCF has requested the Virginia Veterinary Service to degrade PETA and classify it as a slaughterhouse. ...
-PETA hasn`t slowed down its hypocritical killing machine one bit, but it keeps browbeating the rest of society with a phony `animal rights` message. ... Since killing pets is A-OK with PETA, why should anyone listen to their demands about eating meat, using lab rats for medical research, or taking children to the circus?

“The president tends to roam around the larger [White] House and sometimes walks into meetings that weren’t previously on his schedule,” Gibbs said.

Get the f@#& outta here!
A “friend” of Vice President Joseph Biden’s daughter, Ashley, is attempting to hawk a videotape that he claims shows her snorting cocaine ...
The camera follows the woman from a few feet away, focusing on her as she moves around the room. It appears not to be concealed. At one point she shouts, “Shut the f--- up!"

Ready to Be a World Leader?

Here is the Secretary of State of the most powerful nation in the Free World sending subtle, diplomatic “signals” [of the Smart™ variety] to a petty tyrant who is playing with some big toys.

Creeping Incrementalism
So China—lacking any faith whatsoever in ∏eh n∅∅b & ∏eh n∅∅boyz—is making noises overhauling the global monetary system, dropping the dollar and making up some other reserve currency. Greeeat.
Some random ‘porter ["one who carries the nooz"] asks TurboTaxTimmy about it and he plops out this thoughtful and eloquent howler:
"I haven’t read the entire proposal,” Geithner said. “But the governor is a sensible man [and] anything he says deserves consideration.” As for “increasing the IMF drawing reserves, we are favorable to that."
And in minutes the dollar index plunges 1% and the dollar slides as much as 1.3 percent against the euro within 10 minutes of news accounts of Geithner’s remarks. And then - when he played “take backs,” it bounced back up.
Hey, kid—yeah you with the “Property of Treasury” t-shirt. Do you know you are the Secretary? Yeah. Of The Treasury. Yees - of the freakin’ United States of America? Didja remember that?
Do we need to go over the concepts of “markets” and “confidence” and “consistency” again?!?
First you crack off that China’s manipulating the yuan—nevermind the facts - one does not say it [unless prepared to do something about it]—and now you come off with this “the governor is a sensible man” shinloa—What The Hell? Duude.
Simmer down, Son.

well, thank heavens that’s over
[Ann Compton:] Yours is a rather historic presidency. And I’m just wondering whether, in any of the policy debates that you’ve had within the White House, the issue of race has come up or whether it has in the way you feel you’ve been perceived by other leaders or by the American people? Or has the last 64 days before a relatively color- blind time?
OBAMA: I—I think that the last 64 days has been dominated by me trying to figure out how we’re going to fix the economy, and that affects black, brown and white.
And, you know, obviously, at the inauguration, I think that there was justifiable pride on the part of the country that we had taken a step to move us beyond some of the searing legacies of racial discrimination in this country, but that lasted about a day.
And—and, you know, right now, the American people are judging me exactly the way I should be judged. And that is: Are we taking the steps to improve liquidity in the financial markets, create jobs, get businesses to re-open, keep America safe? And that’s what I’ve been spending my time thinking about.
And we’ll say no more about it.

From 2001-2004, Jackie Clegg Dodd served as an “outside” director of IPC Holdings, Ltd., a Bermuda-based company controlled by AIG. IPC, which provides property casualty catastrophe insurance coverage, was formed in 1993 and currently has a market cap of $1.4 billion and trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol IPCR.
...Clegg was compensated for her duties to the company, which was managed by a subsidiary of AIG. In 2003, according to a proxy statement, Clegg received $12,000 per year and an additional $1,000 for each Directors’ and committee meeting she attended.
Dodd’s public financial disclosure reports [PDF] also indicate he was in Davos for the World Economic Forum where the coming crash [yes - this one right now] was the main topic. I guess he was out shopping for flugel horns during that meeting…

A Firm Grasp of the Obvious...
...and $1.20 will getcha a cuppa joe at the gas station

Meanwhile, the Obama administration, seemingly determined to inflict the maximum possible damage on the economy in the shortest time, is trying to ram a cap-and-trade carbon tax through Congress before opposition can be mobilized. It’s easier to do that, of course, when you know that Congressmen won’t read the statute before they vote on it.
