When Amateurs Attack

ekkonomiks?!?  sci-unts?? whatevahhh!

Global Worms:

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday he still wants to submerge giant turbines below the waters of the Golden Gate Bridge as a way to generate energy for the city, despite a study that recently concluded the idea would cost tens of millions of dollars and is not financially feasible.

...$15 million each and $750,000 a year to maintain .... the tides below the bridge would actually generate only between one and two megawatts of power on average.

...[tidal powah costing] between 80 cents and $1.40 per kilowatt hour, ... Pacific Gas and Electric Co.’s commercial rate for power ... 12 cents per kilowatt hour…

City officials are now awaiting the results of a third tidal power study,

..."It’s a question of your subjectivity,” [Newsom] said

Do not fear, sensible residents of SFreakshow [both of you]—the coming administration of Pedro, Maria and Juan will make better decisions.  [Because even though they’re not citizens and their qualifications are, ...well, running and jumping, it would be raaacist not to vote for ‘em, right?]

Bits 'n' Pieces

"a fighter"

The New Yorker 10 page article on Michelle Obama is oddly disjointed, as though the writer spent hours and hours interviewing and observing, took copious notes and put them together with staples and hot glue…

Some bits that stuck out for me:

... [Michelle] Obama begins with a broad assessment of life in America in 2008, and life is not good: we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. “We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day,” she said, as heads bobbed in the pews. “Folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!”

...

“You’re looking at a young couple that’s just a few years out of debt, ... See, because, we went to those good schools, and we didn’t have trust funds. I’m still waiting for Barack’s trust fund. Especially after I heard that Dick Cheney was s’posed to be a relative or something. Give us something here!”

...

But she thrives in large venues. Cindy Moelis said, “The first time she got feedback on being such a wonderful speaker, I think when people said, ‘Wow, you’re really good at that,’ she goes, ‘Why’s everybody surprised?’ “

...

Valerie Jarrett hired her as an assistant to the mayor, Richard Daley. “In the planning department, part of her job was to help businesses solve problems,”

...

“There were lots of radicals protesting, calling into question his loyalty to the community,” [Ron Carter, a former associate of the Black Panther Party who is the publisher of the South Street Journal] recalled. “She came out the back door, and there were a bunch of hoodlum thugs ready to do a full-blast demonstration. She put on her street sense and asked all the guys, ‘Y’all got a problem or something?’ They all froze, guys who would slap the mayor, who would slap Jesse Jackson in the face, even.”

...

“Hmmm,” Michael Sneed, the Sun-Times columnist, reported in 2006. “Sneed hears rumbles a mink coat reportedly belonging to Michelle Obama, wife of Sen. Barack Obama, may have gone missing following the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s birthday bash at the South Shore Cultural Center.”

...

“...Now we’re keeping, like, a bowl of fresh fruit in the house. But you have to go to the fruit stand a couple of times a week to keep that fruit fresh enough that a six-year-old—she’s not gonna eat the pruney grape, you know. At that point it’s, like, ‘Eww!’ She’s not gonna eat the brown banana or the shrivelledy-up things. It’s got to be fresh for them to want it. Who’s got time to go to the fruit stand? Who can afford it, first of all?”

...

In 2005, their income was $1.67 million, which was more than they had earned in the previous seven years combined. [≈ $238,571—e-C

...

[in 2005] the Obamas moved to a $1.65-million Georgian Revival mansion in Hyde Park, which features a thousand-bottle wine cellar and bookcases made of Honduran mahogany.

...

In 2006, the Obamas gave $22,500 to the church. [Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.’s Trinity United Church of Christ]

...

In portraying America as “a Eurocentric wasteland of lily-white lies and outright distortions,” Wright promulgates a theory of congenital separatism that is deeply at odds with Obama’s professed belief in the possibilities of unity and change.

...

Barack’s advisers have tried to dismiss the criticisms of his association with Wright as a witch hunt by conservative blogs and talk-show hosts. The candidate disinvited Wright from giving the convocation when he announced his Presidential bid.

...

The competition between the two couples, and specifically between Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton, became explicit later when one of Michelle’s advisers pulled me aside and pointed out that Michelle had recently been given Secret Service protection. “So that’s both spouses on both sides,” the aide pointed out.

It appears that her “gritty” South Side upbringing isn’t so granular as it’s been portrayed.  According to the Daily Mail [odd the British journalists are the only ones doing the digging, here] “Michelle’s father was a volunteer organiser for the city’s Democratic Party, a by-word for machine politics in America, and his loyalty was rewarded with a well-paid engineering job at Chicago’s water plant. Even before overtime, he earned $42,686...”

Tolerating the Intolerant

suicide

Today, Harvard happily implements Sharia swim times in the name of Mohammed. ...When I asked Harvard spokesman Bob Mitchell about this new Sharia-friendly policy, he denied that they were banning anyone. “No, no,” he told me, “we’re permitting women to work out in an environment that accommodates their religion.”

By banning all men from the facility, right?

“It’s not ‘banning,’ “ he insisted. “We’re allowing, we’re accommodating people."

Which “explanation” just stinks of desperation.

Too bad the Moslems are constitutionally incapable—despite the Saudi $gajillions—of making their own arrangements for religious-restriction appropriate exercise.  Conservative Christians and Orthodox Jews have faced this for years—and made their own accommodations for years.

Now, who’s gonna drive these women to their spayshul exercise times?  And what are they gonna do with theose religiously-demanded male family members who must accompany them anywhere out of their homes?

ToDaZeD Raaaaacist! Post

the horror...

Stoopy^2

[her 12 year old daughter said,] “who cares what the guy’s middle name is, he looks like Curious George," a caller told Limbaugh… [who sorta laffed]

...Limbaugh probably won’t get much sympathy by laughing at a child thinking a black man favors a monkey.

So....  turnabout is not fair play?  Even tho the definition of racist is treating people differently simply because of their race , we’re supposta treat people differently because of their race to escape being called RAAACIST.

Knowledge [and the Freedom to acquire and use it] is Power

Ignorance [Forced or Chosen] is Death

Last October, [IBN WARRAQ] participated in a debate in London, hosted by Intelligence Squared, to consider the motion, “We should not be reluctant to assert the superiority of Western values." ...Here, condensed somewhat, is the case that [he] made.

The great ideas of the West—rationalism, self-criticism, the disinterested search for truth, the separation of church and state, the rule of law and equality under the law, freedom of thought and expression, human rights, and liberal democracy—are superior to any others devised by humankind. It was the West that took steps to abolish slavery; the calls for abolition did not resonate even in Africa, where rival tribes sold black prisoners into slavery. The West has secured freedoms for women and racial and other minorities to an extent unimaginable 60 years ago. The West recognizes and defends the rights of the individual: we are free to think what we want, to read what we want, to practice our religion, to live lives of our choosing.

...The West has no use for sanctimonious homilies from societies that cannot provide clean drinking water or sewage systems...

Shocking

and look at the weather they had!

Peter Foster writes: It will be fascinating to see how the proceedings of The Heartland Institute’s conference on Climate Change, which is currently taking place in New York, will be covered both by the media and the climate change industry. That’s because, unlike 99% of such conferences, this one is designed to address “issues and questions not answered by advocates of the theory of man-made global warming.” In other words, it’s a conference of skeptics, who are trying to gain a reasonable hearing for the “other side” of the debate.

Report [PDF] here

...Before facing major surgery, wouldn’t you want a second opinion?

When a nation faces an important decision that risks its economic future, or perhaps the fate of the ecology, it should do the same. It is a time-honored tradition in science to set up a ‘Team B,’ which examines the same original evidence but may reach a different conclusion. The Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) was set up to examine the same climate data used by the United Nations-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

...The public’s fear of anthropogenic global warming seems to be at a fever pitch. Polls show most people in most countries believe human greenhouse gas emissions are a major cause of climate change and that action must be taken to reduce them, although most people apparently are not willing to make the financial sacrifices required [Pew 2007]. While the present report makes it clear that the scientific debate is tilting away from global warming alarmism, we are pleased to see the political debate also is not over.

...We regret that many advocates in the debate have chosen to give up debating the science and now focus almost exclusively on questioning the motives of ‘skeptics,’ name-calling, and ad hominem attacks. We view this as a sign of desperation on their part, and a sign that the debate has shifted toward climate realism.

...Global warming ‘skeptics’ in the policy arena include Vaclav Klaus, president of the Czech Republic...

...We stand ready to defend the analysis and conclusion in the study that follows, and to give further advice to policymakers who are open-minded on this most important topic.

Domestic Terrorism

Liberal“ Miserablism in Action

Four large homes are burning at a “Street of Dreams” model home development north of Woodinville, and the Snohomish County District Seven Chief Rick Eastman told KING-TV that a sign saying ELF [Earth Liberation Front] was left at the scene.

...the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.

No reports of injuries in the three-alarm Monday morning fire. Eastman says some of the homes were still under construction.

...Eastman says one is a total loss and two homes are substantially damaged. He says fires also were set at a total of six homes.

The Street of Dreams is an annual showcase of luxury homes in the Seattle area. The latest development is off Highway 522 at Echo Lake Drive.

The ELF or Earth Liberation Front has claimed responsibility for other arsons in the Northwest. A woman is on trial in Tacoma for one of those fires that was at the University of Washington in 2001.

Oh Look, Honey!

that one was booze and that one was meth

Bronzed piles of poo?  Oh!  Not bronzed....

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution last week urging the Department of Public Works to approve a privately funded plan to install “commemorative bronze sidewalk plaques” in the districts of Supervisors Chris Daly and Ross Mirkarimi, both champions of the city’s homeless.
However, it doesn’t seem many of the supes bothered to read the resolution before voting “yes.”

...the idea would be to place human-shaped plaques, about 2 feet by 2 feet, in sidewalks and inscribe them with details of the deceased’s lives and the circumstances of their deaths.

...[Ian ] Brennan [the man behind the project - and who spends his time commuting between San Francisco and Los Angeles] said the plaques are not intended to be provocative, but if the memorials upset people more than the reality of homelessness, “then it obviously illustrates the problem really well.”

[Michelle nevermind Obama] “Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.”

...Mrs. Obama’s compensation at the University of Chicago Hospital, where she is a vice president for community affairs...[was] $316,962 in 2005 ... that does not count the money Mrs. Obama receives from serving on corporate boards. [including WalMart]

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe traditional journalism is out of touch, and nearly half are turning to the Internet to get their news, according to a new survey.

While most people think journalism is important to the quality of life [and perhaps essential to a free republic?], 64 percent are dissatisfied with the quality of journalism in their communities, a We Media/Zogby Interactive online poll showed.

One of Britain’s most influential black figures today accused Barack Obama of cynically exploiting America’s racial divide and gave warning that he could prolong, rather than heal the rift.

..."A vote for Obama is a pain-free negation of their own racism. So long as they don’t have to live next door to him; Obama has yet to win convincingly in white districts adjacent to black communities...” [wrote Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission [GB]]
