It's the NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOs
Ok—someone just shoot Geraldo Jerry Rivers—he’s grabbing babies and crying! That’s a big freakin’ help.
Shep has a point, though. They’re not letting people walk the hell out of N.O. Somehow, someone somewhere thinks it’s better for those thousands in the Convention Center to stay in that building than to let them walk out of the city into an outlying area. Now it may be that the area that is reachable on foot is even worse off than the downtown. It may be that those who could make the walk aren’t the folks they want running around loose in a Hot Zone.
There is so much chaos on the streets that the National Guard is not allowing the Red Cross to go into the city. That’s a clear indicator.
I am seeing the majority of people who’re stuck to be healthy looking adults. It would be verra kewl is those folks could be put to work helping the others instead of being thought of as “victims” to be handled.
But what do I know?

can’t seem to stop watching—might as well blog it
Poor Greta VanSustenrurnnanenn; she’s having a melt-down on national TV. She’s been reduced to using “air/bunny quotes” 3-4 times a minute, with that lovely edge of hysteria in her already grating “voice.” Yikes. She’s lost sight of the idea that she’s there to report—not to “fix” “it” “all.” [Maybe she oughta call on her “fellow” whacky-rich “Scientologists” to kick down “for” these “poor” alien-spirit-ridden “refugees”?] [wow—that really tires the fingers, don’t it, Gretz?]

It's the NOOOOOOOOOOOOs
the lens through which we view our world needs a good Windexing
The difference between FOX and CNN is night and day. FOX is seriously hopeful—almost Pollyannaish. CNN is all doom and blame. They have old pics from yesterday and in the last 20 minutes:
CNN covered the Congressional Black Caucus screeching angrily
FOX covered the ACE head explaining the physical situation and their three levels of plans to repair stuff.
CNN covers the piles of folks “living on the freeway” with babies, mothers makeshift shelters…
FOX covers the 8 mile long convoy crossing the I10 bridge into N.O.
CNN covers a looooong whiney Jackson call, over the same old pics of refugees
FOX shows pics of police stopping a car thief, disarming him, giving him a tongue lashing and sending him on his way.
FOX Air Force One touching down in Mobile, on his way to Biloxie [good for W—all the media focus has been on N.O. I’m wondering whatinhell is happening to the country folk?!? But those areas don’t seem to exist for the media. I’ll make note of that.] [uh-oh - lets see what the Moonbats make of W bringing along KarlRoveHitlerJr, whom they just know planned this hurricane to get rid of Dhimmocrat voters]
FOX covers just regular folks coming into Biloxie to help those who helped them when Pensacola was hit.
FOX one cop said “This is no longer the Jetsons—it’s The Flintstones.”

Get the Salve
Dubya just screwed that pooch
That was ‘bout the most pathetic ‘briefing’ I ever saw. No facts. No details. No plan.
Reporters—from all over—are saying “this is a war zone.” Dubya is making nice, praising ‘efforts’ and talking about sitting Trent Lott’s rebuilt porch.
Howl, pooch. Howl.
What we could have used: Dubya having a Jack Bauer moment.

*eye roll*
gotta say—he showed up
The Revverend Jessie Jackson called CNN to report that he’s standing on an overpass of I10 in N’ Orleans. How he got there De Revverend sayeth not.
He did assert that any reports of snipers taking shots at choppers, hospital workers, ambulances and random folk “are greatly exaggerated” mumbling something about high-spirited youth.
After mentioning that “They’re not looters! They’re undocumented shoppers!"* he then went on to flatly state that it is the ooooooil companies who are the real looters. [ok ok—even a blind pig etc.]
And he was sure to mention that George Bush and Iraq were surely to blame and that a signature on the Kyoto treaty would “surely have prevented” this “terrible terrible human tragedy.”
He continued for several more talking points minutes but as I had fallen unconscious due to severe *eye rolling*, I missed the rest.
*okok—that one I stole from an unidentified commenter at Ace’s, but the rest - verbatim. ...or close enough for Jackson work.
Thoughts on Disaster
this one and the ones to come
It strikes me while watching the Death and Disaster Network [CNN] that many Americans have a certain set of expectations about the world. Those may have to change.
Listening to the various reporters and reports, I hear such uncomprehending amazement that things would deteriorate so rapidly—or at all— into Third World conditions “here in America” “in the America *I* grew up in.” Mebbe I’m just old and jaded, but when I learned the levee broke, I could see this coming. Most of these reporters are 20-something, so I guess they still have a lot to learn about the Human Condition, but I still find it ...disconcerting that so many of them—some of whom have been to Iraq—are so naive. Maybe they thought Iraq is one thing, being ‘over there,’ and America is another, being US and all.
Sure, if some big disaster struck around here, I would expect my neighbors to behave in a rational, decent way. And I’m dam sure that there are a few who would revert to primitive behavior; based on their innately primitive view of the world. Some of those people will be the infantalized underclass or the criminal class, and some will be the brittle, bitter Moonbats who believe that government is really the Perfect Parent. [the “Good Mother"][which is the expectation makes them so very very angry at Daddy Chimpy—but that’s another rant...]
Those who are so shocked will not anticipate primitive behavior and then will become prey. Thereby making conditions more difficult for the rest.
Maybe it’s time for me to knock off watching this TV crappola. I got the general idea already.
UPDATE: As CNN [baldly standing there with its face hanging out] tries to blame this disaster on Bush and Iraq, the lone voice of one ACE engineer is heard, calling in the wilderness, that that program would have made not a lick of difference as “this was about a levee break.”
MORE: The 17th Street Canal break is being closed tonight. BooYah!! Engineers Rock!

Welcome to a Glimpse of the Apocalypse
time to watch and learn
N’ Orleans is flooded. Before the storm hit, gangs were planning where and how to loot the best stuff. The nicer neighborhoods have been stripped, as has everything for which one wouldn’t have to SCUBA dive. That will be next.
Now begin the fires. First the Projects where people were waiting for rescue, attempting to cook or boil water on BBQ grills. That’s what did in San Francisco in 1906—they called it the Ham and Eggs Fire. The fires are in deep water areas fire trucks or rescue of any kind are unable to reach. The fires will spread.
N’ Orleans is like any city; banks, jewelry stores, art museums and galleries. ...what else? With all that world-class temptation, it will only get more dangerous there. Police and rescue workers have already been forced by roving, armed gangs to stop rescuing stranded people. Someone actually shot at one of those big military choppers. What was going through his mind? And who is now on their way in to town to make that ‘big score’ from this disaster?
The area affected is two-thirds the size of California. And Iraq. Currently Iraq is in better shape than the Gulf Coast.
Watching the political pot-shots is mind boggling. I wonder if some of these shot takers actually comprehend what is going on. “The Government should have gotten these people out before the storm!” On what? Brooms? Didja want the mayor to pull those busses out of thin air? And what do you do about those who don’t want to go? “The Government should airlift supplies in now!” Where do ya land it? And will landing supplies for 100 people make a riot break out in a crowd of 1,000? I got an idea—why don’t the pot shot takers shut the hell up and help somehow?
What did they do with the folks who were in the jails? Did they bus them out ahead of the storm? Or did they hafta let them out ahead of the flood waters? That ain’t a whole lotta help.
I see Dubya is sending out the 41 & SlickWillie Show again. I wonder how much aid they’ll raise from Indonesian countries. Maybe we can get some of that loot back that we sent over last Winter. Maybe we can cut down on foreign aid by 10% for a while. At least the UN isn’t tryin’ to force Blue Helmeted rape squads on us. Seems the indigenous gangs have that concession wrapped up anyway.
Seems like the much maligned ‘faith-based community’ is coming through in stellar fashion, coming up with and cooking food to be distributed by the Red Cross in those giant refugee coliseums.
Gretta VanSusternanatunan is really hammering on the “these are the poverty people” note. I wonder if, or how, that will help anyone or anything. ‘Cept the whine in her voice when she says it makes me want to smack her even more than usual.
