Things Are Lookin' Up in NoCA
Just stumbled on this:More than 1,000 Mendocino County residents are licensed to carry guns in public, the result of a policy adopted by Sheriff Tony Craver that makes it easier to get a concealed weapon permit. ...Craver was elected sheriff after making a campaign vow that law-abiding citizens would be allowed to carry guns. ...The reason, [why that many people would want to carry a weapon ] supporters say, is grounded in the potent politics of personal protection and individual freedom in fiercely independent Mendocino County. ...Carrying a gun is a way of life for many who live in rural areas. Modoc County had the highest rate of concealed weapon permits in the state, with 36 per 1,000 residents, ... San Francisco had the lowest, with 0.01 permits per 1,000 residents. ...Right-to-carry advocates contend the drop in gun violence rates in recent years is the result of increased gun ownership. "An armed society is a safe society," said Ukiah business owner Ralph Gomez, who's had a concealed weapons permit since 2003.
And a polite one... [RAH]
California makes it tougher to get gun permits than most other states. It's a "may carry" state, which means applicants must convince officials they're worthy of, and need, a permit, unlike in the 35 "shall issue" states like Texas. Permit holders can't be felons or drug addicts, convicted of violent crimes or have restraining orders against them. They also are subjected to fingerprinting, a Department of Justice background check and must attend a 16-hour firearms safety course. Some law enforcement agencies, including those in Sonoma County, require that applicants also undergo psychological and physical evaluations. Under the state Penal Code, all applicants must show "good cause" for a concealed weapon -- a term that is open to interpretation by local law enforcement officials. In Mendocino County, "the good cause is I can't protect them," Craver said.
At least he's got a grip on the facts.
Happy Bunny Day ! ! !
Well, I am returned. And I'm having trouble getting back into the swing of blogging. So much has happened, of which I was blissfully unaware on vacation. And there was so much to see on my trip that my eyes are full. I learned that it is time that I begin to hunt for a new cozy nest as this one is becoming rather a tight fit. Traffic. Noise. Building of unsightly neighborhood drek. More drek to come. Noise. People. Everywhere! I found a beautiful little town -- no slums at all. And I looked. On all 8 streets. Lawns mowed. Trash put away. People calm and relaxed. One [1] blinking light on Main Street. Far views. Fields of alfalfa. Free range cattle. DSL. Everything I could need within UPS range. Clearly in need of a horse training outfit. I just hafta get past that 35-below in the winter aspect . . . You begin to get the picture. It'll take me some time to wind things up, here, anyway. And the prospect of taking more trips to look isn't all that daunting. Though the thought is unsettling. At best. So if anyone is familiar with living at 35-below, drop me a line and tell me how it is. Especially living with livestock at 35-below. "Only for a coupla days at a time," they tell me. "Not every year." Sheesh.Friday, April 02, 2004
Days of Future Passed
Bill? He's not commenting. Andy Thornton? He's not here either. So it's still me, Tim Kyger, helping Claire while all around me wimp out. Here's a *great* site, IMHO. If I knew how to actually make it an active hyperlink, I would. I understand it's actually simple to do. It would be, I'm sure, if I had a cheat sheet that actually was clear enough about what the actual syntax to be used should be. You'll have to actually copy this URL into your browser yourself, all on your own. It's a site called "Oldversion.com" It's where the digital dead rest in peace; old programs never die, they just get archived here. If you want a copy of RealPlayer 4 instead of, say, RealOne, because RealOne is such a pain in the patiute, go to this URL and download the sucker! And other useful programs too. http://www.oldversion.com Not exactly a complicated URL, is it? Oh, Bill....I know you're out there somewhere....Thursday, April 01, 2004
This May Be April 1st, But This *IS* True!
Tim Kyger, guest blogger here, guesting for Claire, and covering for Andy Thornton and Bill Patterson. Yes, it is April Fool's Day, but the following is no joke. It may be the most important news of 2004: http://www.spacedaily.com/upi/20040331-17482700.html Mars got bugs -- NOW. Not fossils; great heaping mounds of farting alien microbes. Well, maybe. But one can hope...and this is the best evidence for such hope yet.Statistics
