Here's a meme . . .
. . . that I want to keep an eye on. Michele thinks that 2004 will be the year of the face-off between the Right and the Left. Today she cites Ted [ptui] Rall's scrawls as support for her point. Maybe I'm just out of the loop here in The Country™, but I don't see that many head-bashing mouth-foaming anti-war "activists" out and about of late. Even inEveryone from radical anarchists to moderate environmentalists expects the NYC/GOP ideological collision to spark the biggest American protest march since the end of the Vietnam War. ...a well-connected progressive leader predicts, ..."Things are gonna burn, people are gonna die."
Whoa fella. What kind of "progress" is this "well connected progressive" talking about? "Back to the caves in droves?!?" And why call it a "protest march" when what is being described is a riot? What could be the possible motivation for all that? Kill all evil humans? [uh oh. that's it, huh?]
It calls to [paranoid] mind a kind of Apocalyptic scenario with the dark forces of evil and entropy lining up for attack on the forces of Light and Life. The Islamofacists teaming up with the Socialists and a few left-over CommiePinkoBastards to square off against the Coalition for Civilization and Rational Thought?!???!!!?
If that is truly in the wind, I think it is high time to change the direction of the dam wind. Let's use some of those civilized thinking skills to reason our way clear of that kind o' wasteful, pointless mess. It reeks of the temptation to join the irrationalist illiterati in that childish, black and white, emotion-tinted thinking perceiving of the most primitive sort.
Just today I read where Deanis feeling discouraged by the disgust he feels at seeing so many who are actually willing to turn to physical threats over a disagreement on a blog. I feel for his dispiritedness -- and I heartily agree with his commenters that to give in and give up is to aid the forces of darkness.
So while all about us are losing their heads, let us keep ours, make reasonable preparations, and pull together to figure out what we can do to avoid wasting time, energy, and civilization on squabbling with asshats.
We Are The People
...at least the literate onesThe New Road to the White House [Lawrence Lessig ] When they write the account of the 2004 campaign, it will include at least one word that has never appeared in any presidential history: blog. Whether or not it elects the next president, the blog may be the first innovation from the Internet to make a real difference in election politics. But to see just why requires a bit of careful attention. Politics has always been about engaging people to act. It is still that today. ... Enter the blog, a space where people gab. As implemented by most campaigns, it is a place where candidates gab down to the people. But when done right, as the Howard Dean campaign apparently is doing, the blog is a tool for building community. The trick is to turn the audience into the speaker. A well-structured blog inspires both reading and writing. And by getting the audience to type, candidates get the audience committed. ...None of this works unless the blog community is authentic. And that requires that members feel they own their gabbing space. A managed community works about as well as a managed economy. So the challenge is to find a way to build community without the community feeling built.

STORM IN PROGRESS: A severe geomagnetic storm is in progress on Oct. 30th. It began at approximately 1700 UT when a coronal mass ejection (CME) swept past Earth. The CME ( movie ) was hurled toward our planet yesterday by an X10-class explosion from giant sunspot 486. Sky watchers at all latitudes should be alert for auroras. Oct. 29th was a great day for sky watchers. A CME hit Earth's magnetic field and triggered an extreme geomagnetic storm. In the United States, Northern Lights appeared as far south as Florida, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

Even in Georgia?!?
Yep -- they gots fools in GA, too!Anti-SUV sentiment on campus [U of G in Athens] came to a head September 30 when vandals sneaked into a fraternity house parking lot and scratched up several SUVs. Christopher Ingham, on the other hand, says he doesn't condone ecoterrorism, but believes "Sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do." Ingham is a junior from Augusta, Georgia, who tools around campus on a 1980 Vespa scooter [emph. mine, ed.]
Pretty big but there, Vespa Boy. As I recall, frat guys don't take kindly to folks a messin' with their prides rides. . .
But not all are maroons:
"It's a coward's way to get your point across," says [John Waters, a freshman from Peachtree City . "If you're against SUVs, and you're worried about the environment, the way to make change is to do it the proper way. Don't go destroy someone's property. We have a fairly efficient political system in this country. People can have an influence."
Or maybe I spoke too soon . . .
the alternative fuel vehicle is a patch, a Band Aid solution to a larger problem," says Jacob Lindsey, [of Students for New Urbanism]. "It is the automobile itself that creates mobility and many of the social inequities we have in the United States."
Mobility makes for inequities, eh? I thought it was lack of mobility . . . silly me.
Canadian Humour, eh
Ever since I saw the giant crossed hockey sticks at Expo Vancouver, I have had a great appreciation for Canadian humour. Kind, gentle polite people they are - and snarkier than ...er, heck! See below the fold:Of Popeye, Patterico and Payoffs
I lightheartedly put out a challenge to Name That Tune and fellow Bear Flagger Patrick got it in one note!! [I'm gonna hafta work a leeedle harder 'round here . . .] The Prize? Five [5] Trackbacks. I know I've read rather more than a few interesting posts over at the ol' Pontifications of late. Let's go choose: Patrick says a long and meaningful "farewell" to the Schiavo Controversy while demonstrating yet again that it is better to think for one's self than simply "trust the authorities," be they medical or media. Being of a fair predisposition, Patrick also gives the Dirty Dog Trainer its due as it braves the revenge of the PC and reports as news the ...er, uneven playing field which must be braved for admission to a UC school. There is a great review of the new Disney Concert Hall. Apparently Mouse Ears aren't going to be required garb . . . Another notable post in the Patterico Series of Farewell to the Schiavo Controversy covers the interview with LarryKing. These are *some creepy people* indeed. Patrick, thanks for listening to this so we didn't have to. In the long battle against language-as-instrument-of-obfuscation Patrick points out to the dupes and dopes who allow themselves to be used as pawns in the "Anti-war" demonstrations exactly who they're working for. [eg "The Iraqi anti-colonial resistance" is ANSWER's code phrase for "jihadist suicide bombers."] There is much more very good reading at Patterico's Pontifications -- but I only promised five [5] TBs, so you'll have to form the habit of checking for yourselves.
